Memoir reflecting society, the arts, farming, and being Jewish in pre-World War II Germany. The author was an associate of the famous writer Robert Graves who translated the book with Laura Riding. Graves and Riding started the Seizen Press in 1926. 278 pages with a frontispiece photo of the author. Previous owner's bookplate on inside front cover. Some light foxing and toning to paper. An extremely uncommon book.

First edition, first impression, of this memoir by a German art-dealer who fled Nazi Germany and became Graves's neighbour in Majorca, "a charming, individual and informative book which never received its due" (Seymour-Smith, p. 245). Graves and Riding worked from a literary rendering prepared by Kenneth Gay (born Karl Goldschmidt), Graves's personal secretary, companion and editor on Majorca. Octavo. Original orange cloth, spine lettered in black. With dust jacket. With photographic frontispiece. Slight bump to foot of spine, a little rubbing to extremities, top edge a touch foxed, else clean. A near-fine copy, in the bright jacket, price-clipped, spine panel toned, spine ends nicked and creased, small chips to one tip, else a sharp, bright example. Higginson, A45.
