Description:
1916. The bombardment of Anzac Cove 26 April 1915 is recounted by the author, a stoker in the British Navy, used this journal, a repurposed "Day Book of Engineers' Stores," to record his service off the Egyptian, Turkish and Syrian coasts, in the Dardanelles, and off the coast of Bulgaria during the First World War, with near daily entries between August 1, 1914 and March 26, 1916, aboard the H.M.S. Doris. The Imperial War Museum holds a diary of Captain Twigg of the H.M.S. Doris, where it states that their first action was on 25 April 1915 when she bombarded forts around Bulair. "On 26 April, together with H.M.S. Triumph, Doris shelled the area around Gaba Tepe in support of Australian troops."* Bowden's journal adds another perspective to the information from Captain Twigg. He is quite specific about which ships were involved in the various actions, what kind of shells were used in bombardments and later tells of the drowning death of his brother, who was in the British Army, and the subsequent…

First World War Photograph Album

Exceptional album of 141 original photographs of World War I in France, including 44 photographs of tanks stamped "SECRET" to front and with official stamp from the "Section Photographique de l'Armée" to the reverse, views of demolished buildings around Vienne-la-Ville, battlefields, aerial views from the Somme region, mortars, and German aircraft, all with handwritten captions, several with dates including 1915, 1916, 1918, and one dated 1921. All but one of the photographs inserted into pre-cut slots in special photo album pages, one photograph loose. Photographs vary in size from 3-1/8 x 4-3/8 to 9-3/16 x 11-5/8 inches. Oblong 4to. Black cloth-backed boards. N.p., n.d. (circa 1921). Perhaps most interestingly, almost a third of the photographs in this album are stamped "Secret" to the fronts of the photographs and "Reproduction Interdite" to the backs, along with an official French army stamp. Some of the aerial view photographs in this album include battlefields with visible trenches from Vermandovillers and Fort de Vaux, with the photos of Vermandovillers dated September 17, 1916. Additional aerial views feature notations or captions printed within the images, including timestamps, dates, locations, and landmarks. Other notable photographs include a variety of German aircraft, including Fokker, Rumpler, LVG, and Albatros. A remarkable collection.

Description:
Toronto: Macmillan, 1927. 1st Edition. Hardcover. This is the first Canadian edition of the third volume of Churchill's acclaimed history of World War I. Of The World Crisis, Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a unique position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the front; Churchill was First Lord of the Admiralty until 1915 and then, after bearing blame for the Dardanelles tragedy, served as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. The events covered in this volume include Churchill's time commanding a battalion in the line. The Canadian issue of Churchill's World Crisis was published in Canada from the American plates and is very similar in appearance. However,…

1919. Very good. Three months after the armistice, Eleanor Williams sailed from New York aboard the R.M.S. Cornia, arriving in Liverpool on February 9 and proceeding to France. Her duties with the YMCA and the troops of the American Expeditionary Force took her to Paris and various parts of the war-torn French countryside, prior to her return voyage to her home in Brookline, Massachusetts in September. Accompanied by Williams' original red and blue YMCA armband, which she can be seen wearing in several snapshots, this album contains 167 original photographs and 39 postcards. The black-and-white images show volunteers performing Shurtleff relief work, bombed out towns, and various points associated with the war, including The Hindenberg Line, Verdun, The Dariaruat, Soissons, Amiens, Reims, Marne, Fort La Pompelle, Fisyes, Chateau Thierry, and Fort Douaumont. There are also photographs of an American cemetery at Belleau Wood, captured tanks and guns, and two soldiers guarding a prisoner. Also…
