Portland, OR: Artist, 2021. First edition thus. (28) pp., 5.25 x 7.75 inches (closed). Altered book, with images printed over text pages, in an accordion binding attached at one end to the original cloth covers, in the original dust-jacket. Signed and numbered by the artist, in an edition of four variant copies. New.
Printmaker and painter Poppy Dully has produced an extended series of altered books in which imagery from cinema adaptations of literature is reflected back onto the texts. In this example, the artists drawings, based on thirteen scenes from the 1939 Lewis Milestone film version of Steinbecks Of Mice and Men, have been printed as monotypes on selected text pages drawn from a Triangle Books reprint edition of the novel. The finished sequence of printed spreads is attached to the original covers as a double-sided accordion; when opened completely, the book stretches out a full five feet.
The artist notes, Steinbeck wrote this novella as he was living it, working with migrant workers in the Salinas Valley in California. With few words, he asks the reader to consider big issues of life, peoples hopes, dreams, and tragedies. It is a powerful story; some will say offensive. It is not an easy story to read or to watch and yet the story is universal and as relevant today as when it was written.

Description:
This book is in very good condition. There is minor wear on the dust cover and little to no wear at all on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. The pages are white, crisp and free of any markings. "Perhaps because it seems so close in time to our own experience, many art lovers feel a special kinship with the turn of the century. We speak of fin-de siecle artists almost as if we know them, and a large body of scholarly work exists covering nearly every conceivable aspect of the late nineteenth-century philosophy, sociology, and art. Given that, it is a rare and remarkable opportunity when one finds something new and unknown about the late 1800's, a privilege we at the Smithsonian Institute Traveling Exhibition Service are pleased to share with everyone who reads this book and visits the exhibition Art Nouveau Bing...." - Foreword from Art Nouveau Bing: Paris Style 1900

Description:
New Haven and New York: Yale University Press and the Jewish Museum, 2004. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover in Dust Jacket. Fine/Fine. Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) is one of the greatest - and most misunderstood - artists of the twentieth century. His incisive portraits, erotically charged nudes, beautiful drawings, and primitivistic sculpture have been admired for decades. Modigliani's work, however, has typically been examined in the limited context of his so-called bohemian, anti-intellectual lifestyle. This groundbreaking book revises this approach toward Modigliani's art, presenting a convincing revisionist examination of the unique historical, social, religious, and cultural significance of his oeuvre. No Flaws or Blemishes but minimal shelf handling; Still Gift Quality. Dust Jacket with price is in a new clear protective Mylar sleeve..
