Baker. Condition: GOOD+ / no jacket: fading to the black at edges and spine, rubbing to extremities with 1" tear to top spine gutter, corners bumped, webbing exposed at endpapers but book remains tight, toning to endpapers, internally clean except for faint spotting to first few pages and an owner name on the fep. Contents: The Royal Slave; The Fair Jilt; The Nun; Agnes De Castro; The Lover's Watch; The Case for the Watch; The Lady's Looking-Glass to Dress Herself By; The Lucky Mistake; The Court of the King of Bantam; and The Adventure of the Black Lady. [ Aphra Behn, 1640-1689, a poet, spy, playwright, and novelist - Baker in his introduction begins with "To most people nowadays the name of Aphra Behn conveys nothing more intelligible that certain vague associations of license and impropriety..." and ends with "..it must be confessed that, apart from 'Oroonoko,' Mrs. Behn's fiction is of very little importance in the history of our literature." - thank goodness she has been rediscovered in the late 20th century!
