Description:

-------------This edition (a major book from Stein), edited and shortened by Stein's close friend Bernard Faÿ (1893-1978), who also contributes the preface. Faÿ and Stein were lifelong friends. He was the primary translator of Stein's works into French, and despite his anti-Semitism, he protected her and Alice B. Toklas during the Nazi occupation of France; later Stein wrote a letter on Faÿs behalf when he was tried as a Nazi collaborator, and afterwards contributed financially to his escape from prison. - After this French… Read More

... zonder toestemming uitgegeven in de jaren 1942-1945, door A.A. Balkema te Amsterdam. [A'dam, A.A. Balkema], June 1945, 19 x 11cm, pp. 15; sewn with thread in beige wrappers. With introductory text by Balkema and the catalogue of the books. Printed on Ossekop paper; designed by Jan Van Krimpen. A very good copy. - After studying French literature, August Aimé Balkema (1906-1996) opened 1936 a bookstore in Amsterdam in the "Huis aan de Drie Grachten" (Oudezijds Voorburgwal 249). During the second world war, between 1942-45, while Holland was occupied by the nazis, he also published clandestinely some 50 books (bibliophile, limited editions varying mostly between 50 to 400 copies, which were sold without financial profit), and many of them were typographically designed by his friend, the prominent typographer Jan Van Krimpen. Shortly after the war Balkema sold his bookshop in Amsterdam, left Holland and settled in Cape Town, South Africa, where he became a reknowned publisher of scientific books. -…

Description:
Paris, 1931, small 4to, pp. 236 (3); orig. cloth; as published in card slipcase, printed label to one side. Book designed by Monroe Wheeler and printed in Paris in the Didot types by Ducros and Colas; the illustrations done in collotype by Jacomet. One of 660 numbered copies on Montgolfier vellum, after 35 on Maillol and 5 on japan vellum. - A quite good copy; light wear (fading) at head and foot of spine, a faint splash mark at top edge of rear board; tissue guards to illustrations all present. Some normal shelf-wear at the slipcase, without any real damage; printed label browned. - This copy became William S. Cockrell's, when it was given and inscribed to him in June 1963, by the writer Glenway Wescott, who was Wheeler's close friend, lover, and long time companion, and brother-in-law to Barbara Harrison. An impressive book production - Wescott's idea - from this expatriate, Parisian press, of Byron's long narrative poem, containing over twenty painterly illustrations by Sir Francis Cyril Rose…

Description:
Calcutta, Bombay and London, Thacker, Spink and Co, 1891, 8vo, pp. vi, 125, 24 (publisher's catalogue in the rear); orig. maroon cloth gilt, drab floral end-papers. Sixth edition. - A very nice copy of this early, Indian edition of Kipling's satirical verses, always regarded by him as "my first book" (1886; see Stewart-Yeats, page 19). The fifth edition by Thacker, and the first to contain a glossary for (non-colonial) English readers. - Stewart-Yeats 12; Livingston 17. - Noteworthy is the following: the first edition of "Departmental Ditties", not published by Thacker, contained 26 poems. The second, now by Thacker, had 31 poems, and the third had 41 poems. The subsequent fourth edition (1890), like the fifth and sixth, contained 50 poems. - Very light rubbing at top and foot of spine and the sharp ringht-hand corners; name and 1891 date in ink at top of half-title page, but in fact, a very nice, bright copy of the book. - [Extra shipping cost for all destinations out with Europe]
