8vo (5.5 x 8) Stated 1st edition. Black cloth with rosary wrapped lily escutcheon to front board, gilt titles at spine. 273pp. Lily and sacred heart motifs stamped to endpapers, bevelled page edges, top edge stained red. Near fine with light bumping to cloth at spine. Lacks the scarce dust wrapper.
A biography of St. Teresa of Avila by Mrs. Cecil Chesterton, wife of G.K. Chesterton. In the first Chapter, she strikingly compares the vitalities of St. Teresa to that of her husband's famous nemesis, George Bernard Shaw. "These two great figures, the fervent Catholic, the fastidious Protestant, can join hans across the centuries in their persistent hunger for experience, their relentless courage toward life. Each soul flourish best in its fit soil, and the end for all is surely the attainment of an increasing and eternal growth."
