Having entered the East India Co. at an early age Craufurd returned from India aged 40 to live in Paris where he was on intimate terms with Marie Antoinette. His first work on India "Sketches on the History, Religion, Learning and Manners of the Hindus" was first published in 1788 with a further two editions in 1790 and 1792.
