Lwow (now Lviv, Ukraine) was an important center of learning and culture in historical Poland. Richly illustrated, with sidebars defining new vocabulary words for the student . Unusual, with no institutional holdings found through OCLC.

Oblong quarto 19x 22.5 cm., wrappers, (16) pp. A visit to an Arabian town, with a critical look at the British colonizers, showing protests by Arab youths and a workers strike, in an otherwise pleasant setting of children playing with a kite, foreign visitors touring, and merchants trafficking. Ada Iul'evna Engel -Roginskaya (1900-?) was a children s book artist, close friend of the Pasternaks, somewhat obscure. Worldcat locates three holdings here (Columbia, Univ WA, NYPL).

Quarto 22.5x19.5 cm., wrappers, (10) pp. A fine book introducing the young reader to tea production, making, and distribution. Author and book artist David Shterenberg (1881-1948) was a Ukrainian Jew born in Zhitomir. He held high positions in the earlier decades of the Soviet era (Commissar of Artistic Matters, etc.), worked closely with Lunacharsky, headed the Jewish Society for the Furthering of the Arts, and enjoyed a successful career as a graphic artist until he ran afoul with the state directives after 1930 and fell into obscurity. Quarto 27.5x21.7 cm., wrappers, (14) pp. Children s poems by Nikolai Agnivtsev (1888- 1932), known for his children's books in addition to his own poetry. He also established a hand puppet theater in St. Petersburg. The Cup of Tea is a well know children s book, although only two holdings found in North American institutions (Princeton, Texas A&M). Soviet book artist Vladislav Tvardovskii (1888-1942) was also a film animator and director. He died in the siege of Leningrad. A stunning work. This copy fine.

Octavo 16 cm., 13 pp. Illustrations by A. Laptev. Aleksei Laptev (1905-1965) was ab Acadent Member of the USSR and Honored Artist of the USSR, chiefly known for his work as a children's book illustrator. Vladimir Mayakovsky and other Soviet poets found that children's literature provided an outlet that was, up to the mid 1930s, free of censorship.

Quarto 22.5x18 cm., wrappers, (10) pp. Lev Nikolaevich Zilov (1883-1937) began his writing career in 1903, was engaged in public education and authored poetry and over 50 children's books, although he was never admitted to the Writers Union. Died of natural causes in 1937. Aleksandra Sergeevna Soborova (1882-?) was a painter and graphic artist who illustrated a number of children's books in the 1920s. The present work, one of several duologies of this artist and poet, depicts a book-walk through a noisy, hurried city street of the NEP era. OCLC locates one holding (Princeton). This copy fine.

Quarto 30.5x23 cm. wrappers, (14) pp. Lidia Budogoskaia (1898-1984) led a difficult but principled life and dedicated most of her writing to children's literature. She is most famous for The Story of the Red-Haired Girl, an autobiographical account of her early life. which has been translated into many languages. The present work, "How Sanka Was Brought to the Hearth," engaged Aleksei Pakhomov as the illustrator. Pokhomov (1900-1973), studied and worked under Lebedev, where he acquired mastery of the lithographic art. When designing the book, Pakhomov used his impressions both from annual trips to his homeland, to the village of Varlamovo, Vologda region, and from visits to the "Sower" commune in the North Caucasus in 1930 and the "Beautiful Mecha" commune in the Oryol region. This story with Pakhomov's illustrations was first published in two issues of the Chizh magazine, to which Budogoskaia was a regular contributor. OCLC finds two holdings of this work (Univ College of London, Univ Central Missouri).

Quarto 29x23 cm., wrappers, (8) pp. Sofia Fedorchenko (1888-1959) was the celebrated author of The People at War, which chronicled soldier's stories during the First and then civil war when she served repeatedly as a nurse. After 1924 she focused on children's books, and later in life historical works and fairy tales (skazki). Ivan Efimov (1878-1959) is widely known for his work as a sculptor, but he also illustrated a number of children's books. Worldcat locates two holdings. This copy fine.

Quarto 30x22.5 cm., wrappers, (12) pp. Rhymes for children by Nadezhda Aleksandrovna Pavlovich (1895-1980), known primarily for her poetry. From 1925 to 1932 she published a series of children s book. The illustrator Vladimir Mikhailovich Konashevich (1888-1963) was a graphic artist, art historian well-known to Russian readers for his classic illustrations of children s books, including Samuil Marshak and Kornei Chukovskii. No institutional holdings of this book found in worldcat. Very good++, near fine.

Octavo 16x13 cm., wrappers, (14) pp. Lina-Sofia Samuilovna Neumann (1883-1971) was a children's book author and Russian literary scholar. She was already an established pedagogue before writing her first children's book in 1927, along with expanding literary studies and writings. She went silent after 1937 until 1960, and was only accepted into the Writer's Guild at the age of 78. OCLC locates holdings at Getty, NYPL. Very good+ with sunned spine

Squarish octavo 22.5x19 cm., wrappers, (10) pp. A slovenly boy severely abuses the books in his household, leaving missing covers, torn pages, and other damage in such classics as The Brothers Grimm, Don Quixote, and Robinson Crusoe, among others. The books decide to escape, and flee en masse to the public library where they are greeted by a strong, stern, library catalog. They are repaired and put to bed to convalesce. When the boy discovers that all of his books are missing, he goes to the library to inquire about borrowing. The books recognize the boy, alert the library catalog, and - as the final illustration implies - fly off the shelves to chase or attack him. Artist Dmitri Mitrokhin (1883-1973) illustrated this fourth edition.

Quarto 29.5x23 cm. stiff wrappers, 15 pp. Ivan Semenovich Efimov (1878-1969) was a sculptor, painter, set designer, and craftsman who founded the Soviet Puppet Theater with his wife Nina. Here employs silhouette drawing with color rendering in a charming folktale which the couple utilized in their puppet theater productions. OCLC locates three holdings in North America (NYPL, Univ NM, Univ PA). Very good with light cover wear.

Quarto 19.5x17.3 cm., (10) pp. Color lithographed wrappers and illustrations throughout by Tatiana Nastasaevna Glebova (1890-1985). Samuil Marshak (1887-1964) was the father of Soviet children s literature. He was an important editor who commissioned children s books from avant-garde poets and artists who had fallen from official grace, providing them with some foothold in Soviet society. Stalin s sudden death may have saved the life of this four-times Jewish recipient of the Stalin prize. Glebova was a student of Pavel Filonov who produced many children s books and the magazines Ezh (Hedgehog) and Chizh (Siskin). She also provided set and costume designs for the theater and ballet. Six holdings in North America found in worldcat. A fine copy.

Quarto 27.5x22 cm., wrappers, 16 pp. 5th printing. The story of a fly almost killed by a spider. Its' publication led to calls for banning the book, since many took the story as an allusion to the glorious leader Iosif Stalin, but the book was spared and continued to appear in different editions with some alterations. The present copy is in full color with illustrations by Vladimir Khodasevich. Kornei Chukovskii (1882-1969) is regarded as one of the most important authors of children's literature. Konasevich (1868-1963) was a highly esteemed artist for his work as a painter and illustrator He studied with Leonid Pasternak, Korovin, and Maliutin, and was a participant in Mir iskusstva. He specialized in children's books and was a frequent collaborator with Marshak. Mikhail Froman (1891-1940) was a poet and prosaist. He began his career writing children's books, and this is his first. Rare, with no institutional holdings found worldwide.

He left for the life of a poet and authored 15 children's books in the 1920s. The work is illustrated by Pavel Georgievich Pastukhov (1889-1960), Russian and Soviet graphic artist and children's book illustrator. OCLC locates one holding in North America (Univ PA).
