New York: Paulist Press, 1988. First edition. Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket. Pencil note to front pastedown: "inscribed to Fr. David Bromfield, professor at CUA." Book about-fine with a near-fine dust jacket with only minor edge-wear to upper corners and spine. First edition of this critical edition of the diaries of Isaac Hecker, covering the years 1843-1845. This particular copy is inscribed by the editor, John Farina: "To David / with appreciation/John Farina / 11/5/88." After spending time at the Brook Farm, Hecker converted to Catholicism in New York in 1844. He was originally ordained (by Nicholas Wiseman) as a Redemptorist in 1849 before founding the Paulist Fathers in 1858. Farina supplements the text of the diaries with the following sections: Preface, General Introduction, notes on Editorial Procedures, Notes to the Diary, List of Emendations, Bibliography, and Indices. Based on the five-episode BBC Television series from the previous year, the conversation is divided into sections headed: The Convert, The Christian, The Evangelist, The Missionary, The Martyr. Beautifully illustrated throughout with chapter-opening maps and 24 photographic color plates, including a double-page map, "Paul Journeys," and a frontispiece: "St. Paul being mocked by his audience" (a tenth-century illumination of a codex in the monastery of St. Gallen). The text is prefaced with "Variations on a Theme," a selection of quotes by prominent religious figures and closes with A. L. Lilley's prayer "Soul of St. Paul."
