Original exhibition catalog issued on the occasion of an exhibition of books containing illustrations by celebrated painter, engraver, publisher and illustrator Jean-Gabriel Daragnes - specifically, woodcuts. Illustrated with an original portrait etching of Daragnes by Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac, 11 black-and-white Daragnes plates, three depicting lesbian scenes, and an original Daragnes hand-colored engraving laid in showing a husband walking in on his wife in bed with her lover - a scene from Fielding's Tom Jones. Signed and inscribed on front free endpaper thus: "Pour Madame Legat | Ce registre d'etat und des infants | qu'un pere demature confie a | l'assistance publingier | le pere indigne | Daragnes." Otherwise pages clean and free of marking, soiling or staining. All page edges gilt. Gilt bright. Bound in contemporary full black calf with gilt rolled borders to both boards and gilt dentelles. The spine has four (false) raised bands with gilt decoration, and additional gilt decoration at the head and tail of the spine. Spine also has gilt title ("Chapel Services"). Owner's name in gilt to front cover. Very light shelf wear to edges and corners. King's Chapel is the oldest church in America with continuous weekly worship services. Its liturgy is a unique hybrid that reflects this history, largely based upon the 1662 English Book of Common Prayer . A truly spectacular example of this scarce liturgical work in an unusually well decorated American binding.

Bookplate on verso of title page. Tight and clean. This is a first American edition of Stevenson's short story collection. Uncommon in original yellow wraps. This copy is from the estate of Rex Maughan (1936-2021), major Robert Louis Stevenson collector and archivist who, as Chairman of the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, greatly contributed to the preservation of Stevenson's estate in Valima, Samoa.

The stated first edition of this rare and essential 1928 collection of writings by one of the greatest of American essayists (including works published in Harper's and The American Mercury). No interior markings noted (aside from penciled minor marks to decorative front endpapers); binding has a bit of soil and wear and is a presumed second state (first state, as noted in colophon, was a linoleum block print design by Prentiss Taylor). Highly recommended.
