Covers slightly faded, spotted and rubbed, with a few edge scuffs. Embossed cloth covers with gilt emblem present. Bindings tight; hinges sound.. All 8 folding (mostly colored lithographed; on 4 sheets) maps present: Northern Africa, Lower Egypt, Cairo, Barbary, Hea and Marocco, The Road from Fez to the Upper Ziz, Northern Fez, Pory's Map of Africa (reduced). Leo Africanus (Giovanni Leone, Joannes Medices, Eliberitances) was born in Granada, and studied with Giovanni Battista Ramusio. This scarce English Hakluyt edition is based on John Pory's translation (1600) of Ramusio's text (1550). This is a major piece of black history, cartography, and geography. Gotha: Justus Perthes, 1886. VG+, detailed index map of Africa, with a smaller inset map of South America, published for Petermann's "Geographischen Mitteilungen", covering the years 1875-84. B&W, with folds as issued. Extraordinarily detailed, with color coding of various exploratory regions pertaining to the earlier volumes. Petermann was a major force in the historical development of thematic mapping. the map measures 13x15.75 inches (33x40.5 cm)..

London: Edward Stanford (Stanford's Geographical Establishment), 1900. Folding linen backed map, 18 panel, original color, near fine condition (the 7x5 inch boards are a bit soiled, but sound). Very detailed in this region of northwest Africa, with the Mediterranean coast and Strait of Gibralter, with clear views of the Canary and Madeira Islands. The map image measures 20x25 inches. This has early color, a moderatley decorative small cartouche, with a few animals, and a small ship. There is an eight point compass rose and multiple scales. This shows the Philipines, Japan. The image is 6.5x9 inches, with a small stain at the horn of Africa that just crosses the neatline..

Goes inland to Pretoria, Potchefstroom. Has Capte St. Lucia with corresponding bay and lake. A very nice image. It comes from Petermann's "Geographische Mitteilungen". Petermann was a major figure in the 19th century explosion of thematic mapping (see Robinson: EARLY THEMATIC MAPPING...). He apprenticed with Steiler and later helped with the maps of Johnston's PHYSICAL ATLAS... (initially issued as a tribute to Berghaus). The full plate measures 17x12.5 inches. .

Nuremberg: Homann Heirs, 1737. VG, nice early color. Few small verso repairs at margins with archival tape and mild soiling edges, extra 3 inch lower crease. No image loss. Attractive b&w cartouche, as issued, with lions, aborignals and lounging Europeans. This is map 83 in Norwich's 'Maps of Africa'. Haas was a professor of Mathematics at Wittenberg. Relatively accurate detail for the times. the handsome image measures 18.25x22 inches (47x56cm)..

Paris, c. 1748. G+ w/some minor soiling, hand colored outlines. Moderately detailed for the time. This map is probably from Atlas Portatif, although the image differs slightly from Norwich's (Maps of Africa, 2nd ed., Map 90) in that the indication of Delahaye as th e engraver is not present on the map offered for sale here. This is a good map, but not the quality of the other, nearly identical, map also currently in my inventory.
