Description:
10th title in the series. A very-well-bound volume in original pebbly Blue cloth. Corners and binding with minimal wear; lettering on spine slightly faded but still easily readable. Contents Very Good and clean; the only flaw per se is the fact that there are 2 wrinkles on most of the pages, about 1/3 from the top, and 2/3 from the top. It's as if 2 round items have been in the book for a lengthy time and the book has had considerable weight on it to make these impressions.?? Still a handsome little volume despite being around for 161 years so far.

Description:
From the d.j.: "Aesop, so it is said, was a slave who lived in Greece about 2,500 years ago. Since it is not easy for a slave to speak directly about the things that are on his mind, he invented sly, witty, and indirect but meaningful fables. If you read or listen carefully, you will realize that the animals in his stories are really people in disguise, and that each tale contains a piece of good advice--a sort of hidden message from Aesop. Though they have been changed, retold, and added onto many, many times over the years, these classic fables have never lost their wisdom. Now Eric Carle has chosen twelve of his favorite tales and retold them in a simple manner to make them accessible to the very youngest readers or listeners. His brilliant illustrations, which combine collage with gouache and crayon, are filled with details that will enrich the child's enjoyment of the fables, while adding an element of wry social commentary that Aesop himself would have enjoyed." Uncommon.

Description:
Aiko Miyawaki: Documents from an Artist's Life. "People tell me that I'm not at all a typical Japanese woman. I laugh and I think of my free-spirited mother and radical father...so radical in fact, that he was in prison for protesting a landfill project when I was born. He was an anarchist, a pacifist. My mother came from an old proud family in Izu. Her ancestors were the Saiwa Genji; we grew up before the war, in a big house in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture with many servants. My mother always spoke her opinion and encouraged those around her to develop their talents. Even one of her housekeepers became a calligraphy teacher. As for me, when I grew up I wanted to be a writer like the Heian essayist Sei Shonagon. Japan has such a long tradition of women intellectuals, and it seemed perfectly natural that I would be one myself." Aiko continues to describe life during WWII and afterwards how she concentrated on her career.

Description:
From the d.j.: "Heaven and Hell" is a companion volume to Mr. Huxley's challenging book "The Doors of Perception", and it will be read and argued about with no less eagerness than its predecessor. Mr. Huxley is concerned here with "the supreme truth that perception...can be the same as Revelation". Visionary power, attained once by fasting and mortification, can be achieved today through certain drugs, through hypnosis, or the stroboscopic lamp. The experimenter finds himself in an unexplored New World of the mind, the Antipodes of his normal conscious living, whose properties have a heightened significance, a pure intrinsic value. This world can have the characteristics of the Paradise or the Fairyland of religion and folk-lore; but negative emotions--fear, hatred, anger or malice--will turn this heaven into a hell." In addition to the main essay, there are 8 fascinating appendices.

Description:
A story about life in the northern prairies of Canada. "It is a true account of pioneering in the bush country of Manitoba, north of 53. Tom Lamb, the author's father, came to Canada from Yorkshire in 1891. In northern Manitoba he met and married a girl from Portsmouth, they raised eleven children. It is a heart-warming story of their trials, tears and happiness and their struggle to hew out a living in the wilds of an unsettled land. Written into it is the deep understanding and tolerance that grew between the family and the native Indian, the help they gave one another as equal friends facing and overcoming common problems." From the d.j. Map endpapers. Very nice signature of the author on the half-title. Numerous b/w photographs.

From the back cover: "In this ground-breaking book, based on new research, Grahame Anderson tells the story of Tasman's voyages of exploration, and explains the pivotal role of Isaac Gilsemans, the "Merchant of the Zeehaen", who sailed with him in 1642-3. Cartographer, illustrator, editor, and explorer, it was Gilsemans who drew the coastal profiles of lands visited during the voyages. But it wasn't until he did some on-the-water research in 1985, sailing in search of Tasman's anchorage near D'Urville Island, that Anderson discovered something that no one else had realised for more than 340 years. The illustrations that formed part of the official record of the voyages were precise cartographic documents, not vague sketches of unidentifiable coastline, as had previously been thought. The fifteen years of research that followed his discovery bring the name of Isaac Gilsemans into the forefront of the history of seventeenth century oceanic exploration, and shed new light on Tasman's voyages around the… Read More
