Description:
[Paris: Felix Malteste, 1849].. 15,[1]pp. Modern half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Light, intermittent soiling. Very good. The first issue of Étienne Cabet's periodical ICARIE, dated March 15, 1849, a compendium of letters and journal entries providing news of the Icarian utopian settlements in America to French and European audiences. This is an important and exceptionally scarce resource for a firsthand view of the difficulties settling in America that were faced by followers of the French politician, journalist and author, Étienne Cabet, whose theories for creating a communist utopia they sought to put into practice. The Icarian communal society "was the quixotic hope of Frenchman Étienne Cabet, who visualized a community with a controlled economy based on democratic decision rather than dictatorship. Cabet, a utopian socialist, contended that men suffered misfortune in society only because society was poorly organized, that inequality could be abolished only through common ownership of…

Description:
Three Rivers [Trois-Rivières], Québec: G. Stobbs, 1838.. 24pp. 12mo. Original blue paper wrappers. Spine perished, wrappers nearly detached. Moderate tanning, occasional foxing. Good plus. A rare account of a grisly incident in the fur trade in Northwestern Canada, in which Baptiste Cadien, a half Indian serving as an interpreter for the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Norman, murdered half a dozen Hare Indians, and wounded several others in 1835. The crime took place in what is now Alberta province, somewhere north of modern-day Edmonton, not far from the Lesser Slave Lake. Cadien was accompanied by two other men, Creole Lagrisse, who participated in the murders once they began, and Baptiste Jourdain, upon whose testimony Cadien was convicted. Several sensationalized contemporary account of the killings asserted a romantic motivation for the killings, by which Cadien sought revenge for losing a paramour back to her husband of another tribe. Jourdain's testimony printed here suggests animosity between…

Chicag: The Lakeside Press R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co., 1947. xxx,181,[4]pp., plus one plate. Frontispiece map. 12mo. Original dark red cloth, spine gilt, front board gilt-ruled with gilt-stamped publisher's logo, t.e.g. Spine lightly faded. Interior clean and bright; text block warped along bottom edge. Very good. Lakeside Press edition of two 17th century memoirs, both dedicated to describing the indigenous peoples of North America. This is number forty-five in the Lakeside Classics series. Cadillac, the key figure in the founding of Detroit in 1701, attempts to draw a comprehensive picture of the tribes living in the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi Valley regions. Liette's memoirs focus specifically on the Illinois Indians, and were first published in English in Volume XXIII of the Illinois Historical Collections as "Memoir of De Gannes Concerning the Illinois Country," due to the copyist (De Gannes)'s signature at the end of the original manuscript. This is the first publication of Liette's…

Contemporary ownership signature on front wrapper and titlepage. Internally clean. Good. James Caird (1816-92) was an agriculturalist and member of the British Parliament. Description:
Lima: Plazuela de San Christoval, por Juan Joseph Gonzalez de Cossio, 1752. [46],279,[1]pp. Numerous errors in pagination. Small quarto. Contemporary vellum, lettered on spine; recased, with new endpapers. Lower corner of rear cover repaired. Minor toning to a few leaves. Near fine. First American edition of this work by the Spanish Jesuit, Calatayud, containing theological advice for priests. The work was first published in separate editions in Pamplona and Valencia in 1736. This Lima edition includes a preface by Pedro Antonio, Archbishop of Lima, outlining the reasons for reprinting the text, and reprints the original dedication and various approvals from the earlier editions. The work consists of six discourses intended to guide priests in their ministerial works. More a philosophical work than a practical guide, Calatayud explores the moral and religious obligations which priests have to those they serve and to themselves. The sixth discourse is addressed to bishops and prelates, and the final…

Description:
[N.p., but likely Madrid, N.d., but ca. 1601].. [2],24pp. Folio. Dbd. Dampstained and soiled, top and bottom edges worn. Worm holes throughout, affecting a few words on each page. Contemporary underlining and marginal lines throughout, contemporary handwritten folio numbers on each recto. Still a good copy. In a half morocco and cloth box. An extremely rare treatise which considers the question of whether rebellious Indians in Chile should become slaves. Addressed to the Viceroy and Audiencia of Peru, the work discusses whether slavery of conquered Indians is just or not, reviewing arguments on both sides of the question. Calderón approaches the problem in an intriguing manner by providing separate justifications, each in its own individual section of the text, for enslaving the Indians from the various points of view of the King, the Kingdom, and the Church. In turn, the author then provides responses to these various assertions, promoting the view that such slavery would be unjust. The last pages…

Philadelphia, 1819. xxiii,[1],452pp. plus two folding facsimiles. Portrait. Contemporary calf, maroon gilt morocco label. Minor nick at head of spine, small old label on spine. Lightly tanned. Later bookplate on front and rear pastedowns. Very good. Lacks the errata. An engaging biography of Gen. Nathanael Greene, with descriptions of many of the major battles of the Revolution, in which Greene played a significant role. Most notably, Greene was instrumental in wearing down Cornwallis's superior forces in the southern theater through a series of guerilla encounters. The folding facsimiles here reproduce two letters dated in 1779: the first, a letter from Greene to John Jay regarding positive Congressional acknowledgement of Greene's activities as quartermaster general of the Continental Army, and the second, a letter from George Washington to Greene pleading for a penknife during Greene's stint in the same position. The Appendix includes the text of Gen. Greene's letter to Congress resigning as…

[San Francisco: Printed by Wm. C. Brow, 1889. [6],54,[11]pp. including one chromolithographic advertisement, plus three colored folding maps and four photographic plates of ships. Original brown cloth, gilt title on front board within gilt border. Minor wear and soiling, corners lightly bumped and worn, front hinge a bit weak. Small ink stamp on blank facing first text leaf. Clean, closed five-inch tear to map of San Diego Bay. The second edition, greatly enlarged and improved over an edition published in 1886. This scarce guide to West Coast ports was produced by J.D. Spreckels & Bros., a major firm of commercial merchants and shippers on the Pacific Coast. Judging from the elaborate binding and production, it was likely issued in a small edition for presentation to current and potential clients. The text gives much useful information on the ports of San Francisco, San Diego, Portland, Puget Sound, Vancouver Island, and Honolulu, including customs house rules, rates for towing, dockage, pilotage,…
