Message from the President of the United States, transmitting Copies of correspondence with Governor Gaines in reference to the government of the Territory of Oregon. May 3, 1852. 8 pages. Never bound. Before the creation of the Oregon Territory, a group of American settlers created a provisional government in the 'Oregon Country', a contested region in the Pacific Northwest that was also occupied by British and French fur traders. Its legislature selected Oregon City as the capital. When the Territory was established in 1848, its first governor, Joseph Lane, affirmed the location by proclamation. Two years later, the territorial legislature voted to move the capital to Salem, as well as establish a penitentiary at Portland and a university at Marysville. Redwood City, California, 1940.
This typed letter, dated 17 October 1940 and signed by a prominent Issei member of California's Japanese-American community presents a 2' x 4' silk U.S. flag to an unnamed person, presumably a government official or journalist. Both are in nice shape; the display case is not original nor part of this lot.
The letter reads in part:
"At the present time, both Europe and the Far East is going through a turmoil, and the results of the outcome no one knows. . .. We are very fortunate to be living in this democratic country where everything is plentiful. . .. Most countries are striving to get what is lacking in their country. They cannot get amicable term to obtain what they need; therefore, they are using force, the result being war. Galveston, Texas, 1865. Unbound. Very good. This four-page letter was written by Isabella and her three children (Jumain, Miriam, and Rosa) at Galveston on March 7, 1865. There is no mailing envelope and no decipherable surname. In nice shape. In this letter, Isabella informs her husband, presumably in Havana that the blockade runner in which they have booked passage has been twice thwarted in its attempt to pass through the Union ships blockading Galveston, Texas, which at the time was the only Confederate port not to have been captured by the North. Isabella writes: "After several attempts (since last Saturday Night) to run out to pass the fleet in safety, we are still here, since last friday we have been staying at the Steamer, we have been sea sick, were twice near the Yankees, have been aground in the channel, and as yet nothing at all accomplished, except loss of Sleep and great fatigue.
