The story behind this turn of events is intriguing. 'At the age of thirty-one, living as a penniless exile in Berlin, Vladimir Nabokov composed, in Russian, a novel called "Camera Obscura," which he published serially in an émigré journal in 1930. Five years later, the book was translated into…

Description:
Melbourne: The Southern Cross Hotel, 1960. Very Good. Melbourne, The Southern Cross Hotel, [1960s]. Small foolscap; colour pictorial card folded once; spine a little rubbed and splitting at the foot; even so, an excellent copy. Quite apart from the hotel's boast of being 'Australia's Finest Hotel', this Coolibah Coffee Shop menu makes a special feature of their 'Steak Namatjira', 'a thin minute steak grilled to perfection and smothered in a tantalising Arnhem Land Sauce'. If that were not evidence of both Namatjira's enormous and continuing broad-based popularity at the time (he was commemorated on a postage stamp in 1968), the dish must also have proved popular, because there is a proviso; 'Sorry we can't disclose recipe'. A card advertising 'Prime Roast Christmas Turkey and Ham with Cranberry Sauce' is stapled to the recto of the rear cover, dating the month of publication at least; Christmas.

Melbourne: Macmillan Art Publishing, 2014. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Melbourne, Macmillan Art Publishing, 2014. Quarto, 216 pages extensively illustrated in colour. Papered boards lightly bumped at the head of the spine; faint streak to an unprinted area of page 193 (presumably a production flaw); an excellent copy with the excellent dustwrapper a trifle creased. The introduction is by Nicolas Rothwell; with a contribution by Marina Strocchi. 'This book features hundreds of paintings by the distinguished Alice Springs based artist known as Mrs Bennett. A special feature of the publication is the series of photographs showing Mrs Bennett's methods of production - with the various applications of paint and its distribution over the canvas that lead to her readily recognisable personal style. This is a lavishly illustrated account of Mrs Bennett's life and work and, as such, provides another important monograph dedicated to the achievements of individual Indigenous artists'…
