A handy reference or working copy for those working the early 20th century history and development of racial and nationalist thinking. Gilt-lettered dark red cloth, clean and mostly unworn but sp. ends rubbed with top sl. chipped, edges and corner also sl. rubbed. f/piece, famous group photo of Clark University Conference attendees with identification key verso, vii + 280; clean, tight and unmarked, faint hint of edge-tanning, more so to end-papers. Unclipped jacket badly chipped and nicked, top spine region badly affected (though lettering just about escaped), as is bottom fr. edge, also some light grey surface marks to back, will address the tears internally when ordered and add protective sleeve. Green cloth with black lettering and black, white and blue illustration toi fr. cover, similar image in miniature to sp., clean and edges unworn but serious pigment loss patches (from mould?) to back and top fr. outer corner tip, spine sun-faded. f/piece with tissue-guard + 227, 59 further plates ex-pagination (by my count), c. 34 text figs of various sizes inc. some full page, many in Chap.V on 'Model Aeroplanes' separately authored by E.W. A wide-ranging collection of papers on the child's acquition of language, autism, 'retardation' (learning difficulties), 'dysphasic' children and cognition in 'subnormals'. Commentators include Crystal, Jonkheere and Johnson-Laird. Originated as a Study Group held in London 11-13 December 1972. 'Published for the Institute for Research into Mental and Multiple Handicap' (so retardation, subnormality and mental handicap all appear as prefered terms!)

VG-Fine/Good-VG for age. 15 Cm x 21.5 Cm. vi+350; due to quality of paper stock used this is marginally tanned throughout and the paper is all a shade browned, this seems to have stabilised and the paper itself has not become fragile, presumably all copies are similarly affected, otherwise it is clean, tight and unmarked internally in clean unworn covers; jacket, in protective sleeve as acquired, is clean but front wraparound top & bottom clipped - though perhaps this is a design feature, back also top clipped, a number of edge chips, rubbings and creasings but none extend much beyond edge and it remains attractive. Scarce, especially outside U.S. Author was a major sociologist and expert on Africa American folk-lore and culture, whose position on the race issue changed radically over his life-time. Dark cloth. xvi+345+xiv (list of Reports), 4 unf.tables; University of Liverpool's sm.embossed stamps on t.p.& end main text, otherwise no internal lib.labels or markings, an 'Eyre and Spottiswoode' stamp bottom t.p., possibly as they were acting as distributors. Internally clean, tight & unmarked, some splitting towards top of fr. gutter between endpaper & fly - the fr. endpaper appears to have been pasted to the pastedown. Covers sl.rubbed in places and at top.sp., but clean and generally sound, 'University of Liverpool' in gilt bottom sp. - appears to be a library binding. As title indicates this reviews current educational practise in British controlled Africa and Indian Ocean, including, as title continues, 'the training of native races'. VG. 17 Cms x 21 Cms. 47 pp. (English text) + 45 pp.(Arabic text reading right to left obviously), 18 photo-plates of documents repeated in each half, these being of originals from the Omarite Covenant of Omar Ibn El Khattab (Mohammed's companion) dated 15 A.H. down to the 1950s. Fairly faint round red stamps of the British Consulate General Jerusalem' ttop front cover and occasionally throughout. The is clean and unmarked (bar an ink date correction in the same place in each half) internally, covers clean and unworn except for a bump to bottom front corner of spine which is fairly innoucuous (a short tear has been mended). This concerns the Abyssinian Orthodox church's complaints of ill-treatment particularly by the Coptic Church 'from which our community derived its spiritual authority'.
