This pastiche was first published in the volume "The Secret Book'' in 1914. This limited edition of 400 copies by The Aspen Press (their first title) is a volume sought after by both "Droodian" and "Sherlockian" scholars and collectors alike.

One has small piece missing from corner. Typical emulsion flaking at edges. All identified in the negative; most dated in the negative. Great contrast and sharpness to images. Each photo in paper sleeve with photo information in pencil on five of the sleeves. Two sleeves imply the images were reproduced as RPPC's with the postcard brands Noko and Azo noted. We have digitally converted the negatives into positives--the set for sale all are original glass plate negatives. Most photos around 3½" x 2½", 6 are larger, and nearly every page is captioned in a fine hand. Very good condition overall. Covers are lightly scuffed and worn, one leaf is loose, and around 24 images appear to be lacking, including a few excised. A few photos faded, a few scattered small stains. The last 7 leaves are blank. This album was compiled by Lillian V. Polak of New York. All in manuscript--half pen half pencil. Docketed on verso. Good Condition. A special little document with a trifecta of prominent early Southern California names including John A. Rowland, Juan [John] Temple, and Rancho La Puente. Specifically, this is a receipt for grain (bran and corn) milled at Rowland's Mill located at Rancho La Puente. Juan Temple appears to have been the customer with a William Potter acting as agent for John Rowland and his mill. In early 1842, Rowland (also known as "John Roland" or "Juan Roland") petitioned for a land grant and received the 11,740-acre Rancho La Puente. Fifteenth Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution 1893-94, John Wesley Powell, Government Printing Office, Washington D.C., 1897, 11.5 x 8.5 inches, 366 pp. Dark olive green boards with gilt stamped illustration of an Indigenous person in a feathered headdress to front, gilt stamped lettering to spine, and blind stamped border to front and back boards. Newspaper clipping from an 1898 paper named "The Sun" laid in to first free endpapers; the clipping is of an article titled "Gala Day at Columbia", and recounts the 144th commencement ceremonies. A paragraph about cash prizes awarded for best books published in archaeology, ethnology, and philology is framed and underlined in black ink.
