Good (+)/No Jacket (none Issued?). 13.5 Cm x 20 Cm. f/piece+xii+387; front pastedown has large light brown label ghost - sm.fragments of paper suggest this may have been a library plate, but no other signs of library provenance, quite heavy browning to f/piece & t.p., otherwise internally clean, tight & unmarked; covers minimally worn but scattered fading (inc.spine) and darker patches of indeterminate nature (perhaps even the original colour?). This edition 'has been thoroughly revised' and now includes most of a 1904 paphlet by Paget 'The Case Against Anti-vivisection'. An important text in the history of the ongoing vivisection controversy. Semlin, Poland: I. C. Soppron, 1859. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good-Fine/No Jacket. Blue unlettered cloth with gilt central motifs to each cover, joints and bottom spine rubbed and some slight cloth fraying and trace of corner rubbing, small spot of cloth loss lower back and 3 or so small dark spots to front hardly visible against dark blue cloth. 36 pp. gilt edges, outer sides of end-papers and pastedown have a slightly glossy, moire-patterned surface, though inner sides of end-papers as rest of text; no obvious internal faults being clean, bright and unmarked. Am a little puzzled by binding as it seems original (gilt edging to end-papers and these contiguous with paste-downs) but feels later than pub. date, perhaps a later private high-end rebinding with gilt added. A curious exercise in using arabic numbers as basis for a universal, non-phonetic, language. Very scarce.

No obvious faults being clean, tight and unmarked. Unclipped jacket in protective sleeve as acquired is clean but numerous edge chips and rubbings, scarce in any condition. An important edition due to the scrupulous editing (see editor's Preface) which restored text as fully as possible to original form eliminating numerous errors and changes which had crept into previous editions.
