Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1955. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good. First edition. Hardback, bound in the original cloth with gilt titling to spine. 19.5 × 13cm, xv + 360pp. This copy comes from the library of the Rev Kathleen M Hendry and there is a gift inscription to her to the front pastedown. Kathleen M Hendry (nee Hall, b. 1906) was an early female minister for the United Reformed Church, gaining the parish of Shaw and Heyside in Lancashire in 1931. She trained for the Congregational Ministry (her father was a Methodist minister) but has to resign her ministry when she married in 1938. She returned to pastoral charge after the death of her husband. The original receipt from 1959 from the Independent Press is loosely inserted. This book was intended to offer a new interpretation of early Protestantism and, against this background, a searching treatment of modern religious issues. Description:
Not published. Soft cover. Good Plus. This is a collection of six painters from the Newlyn School, the colony of artists based in or near Newlyn, a fishing village adjacent to Penzance, on the south coast of Cornwall, from the 1880s until the early twentieth century. Five are cut signatures (from letters), and one is a signed piece of blue paper. The artists are: 1. Stanhope Forbes (1857-1942), he moved to Newlyn in 1884 and was one of the founding members of the NEAC. His signature is a letter-base with some of his handwriting to the reverse. 2. Samuel J Lamorna Birch (1869-1955), moved to Cornwall in 1892. (These first two signatures come with a covering letter from 1903, gifting to the two autographs to a collector). A signed slip of blue paper containing nothing but his autograph. 3. Arthur Tanner (1857-1916), painter and photographer, friend of Henry Scott Tuke and protege of Norman Garstin. He was one of the first artists to settle in Cornwall. A letter-base, rather crudely torn. 4. Norman…

Description:
London: National Portrait Gallery, 2006. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition. Hardback in dustwrapper. 28 × 23cm, 256pp. David Hockney is one of the most significant artists exploring and pushing the boundaries of figurative art today. He has been engaged with portraiture since his teenage years, when he painted Portrait of My Father (1955), and portraits of family, lovers, friends and well-known subjects represent an intimate visual diary of the artist's life. This authoritative new study examines Hockney's portraits in all media - painting, drawing, photocollage and prints - and is produced in close collaboration with the artist. Together, the authors reveal how Hockney's creative development and concerns about representation can be traced through his portrait work: from his iconic double portraits of the late 1960s and early 1970s to his cubist-influenced investigations of the 1980s and from his recent camera lucida drawings to his return to painting from life in oils.…

Edinburgh: Robert Cadell, 1842. Hardcover. Very Good. 1842-1846. Twelve volumes, complete. Hardback, half-leather binding with five raised bands and simple gilt titling to spine, green cloth boards, with endpapers and page edges in green. Each 24 × 16.5cm. Pagination below. *I'm not quite sure what edition these are, or whether they were bound from parts. The text is printed in double columns, and, apart from a frontispiece and fold-out of Scott's handwriting (possibly bound in from an earlier edition), there are no illustrations (not that they're missing, the illustrations within the text are also absent). Cadell planned to print two sets of Scott's Waverley novels in the early 1840s, this may the "people's edition". Each title has an introduction and notes. The books are: 1. Waverley; or, 'Tis Sixty Years Since, and Guy Mannering (1842, 340pp). 2. The Antiquary, and Rob Roy (1842, pp341-659). 3. Old Mortality, Black Dwarf, and A Legend of Montrose (1842/1843, pp661-817, 134pp). 4. The Heart of…

In photographs taken over seven years and across more than thirty-five countries, Migrations documents the epic displacement of the world's people at the close of the twentieth century. Wars, natural disasters, environmental degradation, explosive population growth, and the widening gap between rich and poor have resulted in over 100 million international migrants, a number that has doubled in the span of a decade. This extraordinary level of demographic change is unparalleled in human history, and presents profound challenges to the most basic notions of nation, culture, community, and citizenship. The first pictorial survey to extensively chronicle the current global flux of humanity, Migrations follows Latin Americans entering the United States, Jews leaving the former Soviet Union, Africans…

London: Calder and Boyars, 1966. 1st Edition 2nd Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First UK edition, second printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 20.5 × 13.5cm, 234pp. Described by various reviewers as hellish and obscene, Last Exit to Brooklyn tells the stories of New Yorkers who at every turn confront the worst excesses in human nature. Yet there are moments of exquisite tenderness in these troubled lives. Georgette, the transvestite who falls in love with a callous hoodlum; Tralala, the conniving prostitute who plumbs the depths of sexual degradation; and Harry, the strike leader who hides his true desires behind a boorish masculinity, are unforgettable creations. Condition: The book itself is in very good condition, with a little gentle tanning to the page edges. The dustwrapper is in very good condition also (it's usually seen much more creased!). It does have some wear to the spine ends and corners but has not been price-clipped and remains in remarkably good order.

London: Longmans, Green & Co, 1928. 1st Edition 2nd Printing. Hardcover. Good/Fair / Poor. First edition, second printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 21 × 14cm, 421pp. "This is the prose epic of Russia in the years between 1915 and 1920. The characters move against a background of mobs and fire, of war and spiritual yearning, and are often drawn with considerable literary power and understanding of Russian psychology. Some of the chapters, like those in which the giant Vavila, the symbol of Russian peasantry, meets the young Leva, or that in which the White officer, Koronin, is forced to pass death sentence on the man who twice saved his life, might claim to belong to the best in Russian literature". Condition: The book is in good condition, with some tanning to the pages but in strong readable condition. The dustwrapper is heavily worn with loss to the head of the spine and chipped to the edges but is now within a protective sleeve.

The whole measuring 30.5 × 23 × 4.5cm. 296pp (text) and 260pp (plates). Text in Japanese and English.Kitagawa Utamaro (1754-1806) is the pivotal artist of the Ukiyo-e school. His sensuous and sharp-witted portrayal of women in all walks of life both celebrate and comment on those of the "Floating World". Discovered early in his career, Utamaro was soon collaborating with the leading writers of the 1790s. The culmination was a sequence of deluxe poetry anthologies, which he illustrated in colour woodblock with figure and nature subjects and erotic scenes. In the 1790s Utamaro transformed the style of Ukiyo-e art with his prolific output of print series: often portraits in the new bust and half-length formats. High-ranked courtesans, lovers from literature and ordinary domestic scenes - all these themes are explored. Boastful of his talents, Utamaro finally came into…

London: Heinemann, 1987. First Edition. . Hardback. Very Good/Good Plus. First edition, first printing hardback in dustwrapper. 22 × 14cm. 215pp. Signed and dedicated to the title page by Clive Sinclair. From the dustwrapper: "Twenty years ago, Clive Sinclair was indifferent to Zion. Then came the Six Day War and a passion for Israel never quite consummated by settling there. In Diaspora Blues he confronts the conflict of loyalties between language and history, between the country of his birth and the land to which instinct and emotion bind him. 'I am Jewish,' says one of Sinclair's characters, 'but my tongue is not circumcised'. Diaspora Blues is both the story of Sinclair's 'coming home' and a portrait of Israel since the Six Day War, seen through the eyes of some of the country's most outspoken artists, poets, novelists and playwrights. The two decades that have seen Sinclair follow his own 'Law of Return' as he comes back again and again to discover Israel have seen widening schisms within the…
