Description:
19. [Kakemono 掛け物 - Hanging Scroll] Ōta Saburo 太田三郎, artist [Painting of a potter and her kiln] [Kakemono 掛け物 - Hanging Scroll] Ōta Saburo 太田三郎, artist. [Painting of a potter and her kiln]. Image size 36.8 X 42.1 cm. Original mounting. The painting is sealed by Ōta Saburo 太田三郎 (1884-1969), a student of the early western-style oil painter Kuroda Seiki 黒田清輝 (1866-1924) and a master in his own right. Perhaps Ōta's most famous work is the series of images in his Taisho-era 2 volume book, Asa Giri 朝霧 [Morning Mist]. In this hanging scroll his rendition of a tile baker and her kiln is lively and colorful.

Description:
MINAKAWA Taizou 皆川泰蔵, , HANGA KYOTO 版画京都. Kyoto, n.d. [c.late 50s, early 60s.] Twelve wonderful Sousaku Hanga Creative Print Movement creations, each about 11" x 15", capturing famous sites of the old capital in a colorful and bold style, true to the spirit of the Creative Print Movement. Minakawa was famous as a potter and weaver and dyer, but here he turns to designing these wonderful prints. They were cut and printed in color woodblock by the masters at Unsoudou, the great Kyoto printing house. So iterating a traditional collaboration, here in a creative print style. But certainly not self-cut or self-printed. Lie the great design artists of the NeoRimpa movement, they relied on Unsodo here to capture their inspiration. It might be said that Minakawa's work here has been lost to history. Single prints from the set reach the marketplace, but this is the first complete album to reach the market in my memory. With the original contents [prints, preliminaries, etc.] of the dark blue,…

Description:
1911. TAKAHAMA Kyoshi, editor. SASHIE. Tokyo, Kokado, Meiji 44 [1911]. This is a "saihan" printed a few days after the first impression. Bound Western style in illustrated boards, 8vo., 421+pp. This wonderful book takes its title [ILLUSTRATION] very seriously. It has crammed from beginning to end with illustrations, both color and b+w, printed with machine-based techniques but with a freshness and appealing naivete that the HOTOTOGISU artists were famous for. The full complement of the most important members of the literary and artistic group that first gathered around Masaoka Shiki. After Shiki's premature death the brilliant poet Takahama Kyoshi and academic and author Natsume Soseki became the leaders of the group. Such wonderful and established artists as Asai Chu and Nakamura Fusetsu, along with younger artists, Hashiguchi Goyo, Tsuda Seifu, etc., were also allied by sympathy and friendship with the group. Here they have put together a wonderful compilation of their "style" in illustration. The…

Author and artist hanko are tipped-in to colophon. 28.5 x 20.5 cm, bound western-style (opens Japanese style) with a color, wrap-around woodblock-printed dust wrapper. In modern chitsu with clasps. Foreword by author and botanist Takeda Hisayoshi 武田久吉 (1883-1972) and afterword by artist Funazaki Kōjirō 船崎光治郎. Index with guide to plates with plant names in Latin and Japanese. The 33 laid-down color woodcut prints of mountain flowers by Funazaki enhance the text and its black and white halftones. They are in a sōsaku hanga 創作版画 (Creative Print Movement) style and are quite beautiful. It is obvious that this work was more than a botanical guide with its large format and lovely prints. It is remarkable that works like this were being published in 1946-7 in Japan, considering the extreme…
