Description:
English architect and artist Thomas Witlam Atkinson (1799–1861) received approval from Tsar Nicholas I to travel and describe the Asiatic domains of the Russian Empire. Beginning in 1847, Atkinson spent seven years on the road and rivers of Central Asia and Siberia. "Travels in the Regions of the Upper and Lower Amoor" is the second of his two accounts. This heavily illustrated story of these travels shines a light on the natural history and ethnography of the region. Former owner's library plate on first pastedown page; two former owner's names and dates (one 1888, the next 1981) scrawled on first free fly leaf. Serious condition problems: Water damage to top of front cover and spine; corners worn; foldout map present but in fragile condition with one tape repair; binding beginning to crack. Interior pages are clean with no extraneous writing or marks.
