London: Staples Press Limited, 1947. First. Hardcoverr. Poor. A.G. Dallimore. A scarce memoir of a British soldier in a German POW camp during WWII. Poor in brown faux leather boards.  Both boards and endpapers are detached, but present, and the spine is deteriorated.  Text is age darkened.  Inscriptions from both the author and the illustrator on the half title page. No other marks. A very uncommon memoir, and very scarce signed. . CH.

Leipzig: Tauchnitz, 1859. First European copyright edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Barchester Towers is generally considered Anthony Trollope's most important novel, and the work that established him as one of Britain's most important authors of the Victorian era.  Trollope was a champion of copyright protection, which was just beginning to be legally implemented, country by country.  In order to establish copyright protection in Europe in Trollope's day, a foreign author was required to publish their works through a publisher on the continent.  Tauchnitz was just such a publisher, and published hundreds of British and American authors during the 19th and early 20th century.    Enhancing the interest of this particular copy, however, is the fact that it was the personal copy of Maurice Sendak, the famous American children's author, who died in 2012.  Sendak, who did not typically identify his books with bookplates or signatures, bequeathed many of the books to the Rosenbach Museum in… Read More

Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810 - 1891) was an American showman, businessman and politician remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus with James Anthony Bailey. He was also an author, publisher and philanthropist, although he said of himself: "I am a showman by profession ... and all the gilding shall make nothing else of me." According to Barnum's critics, his personal aim was "to put money in his own coffers." The adage "there's a sucker born every minute" has frequently been attributed to him, although no evidence exists that he had indeed coined the phrase. Charles Sherwood Stratton (1838 - 1883), better known by his stage name "General Tom Thumb", was an American with dwarfism who achieved great fame as a performer under circus pioneer P. T. Barnum.  Full grown, Stratton was just 2'11" tall.  Under Barnum's management, Stratton became a wealthy man. He owned a house in the fashionable part of New York and a steam yacht, and he had a wardrobe of fine clothes. He also owned a specially adapted home on one of Connecticut's Thimble Islands. When Barnum got into financial difficulty, Stratton bailed him out. Later, they became business partners. Stratton made his final appearance in England in 1878. This is a fascinating group of 5 volumes relating to the WWII Battle of Britain, i.e. the air warfare as the British RAF defended England from the Luftwaffe early in the war.  Three are original publications published during the war, and two later illustrated volumes, each signed by multiple RAF veteran pilots.  All in all, a great collection of the historic event. This faux leather portfolio fashioned to look like a book includes an eight-page pamphlet entitled: "The Book Detektive's Little Black Book: A Record of the Book-Borrowing Habits of Your Friends and a Most Important Admonition" by Christopher Morley being the hitherto unpublished transcript of the criminal trial Pandowdy v Librovore Morley's admonition is on p 4-8 of the pamphlet Also includes cards to track loans (with spaces for marking titles, name of borrower, "if return promised and date returned"), a second series of cards, with each listing "suggestions for luring your books back diplomatically," and book slips on which are printed: "On the Return of a Book Lent to a Friend," from "The Haunted Bookshop", by Christopher Morley There are also a cardboard ruler, and a bright, sharpened "Book Detektive pencil" It shows external wear, with loss of paper to spine and cracking at edges Interior contains four pockets with items listed elsewhere… Read More

London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1869. Hardcover with hand-embroidered covers. Very Good. The book itself is common, no pun intended.  The Book of Common Prayer has been published by the millions.  But this copy is very uncommon, in fact it is likely unique, in that an owner long ago made, or had made, beautiful custom embroidered covers for the volume.  Hand stitched in white and gold thread, the embroidered covers do show some wear for their 150-year age, with corners fraying slightly and some of the thread worn.  But they are still complete and unfaded.  It is apparent that the covers also fulfilled their protective purpose, as the contents, although a bit age darkened, and with a few corners bent, are still in clean and unmarked condition.  Gilt all around, although a bit worn off. The pastedowns are lined with purple, patterned silk. 12mo, binding 130 x 85mm. FO.

Ross Harold Arnett Jr. (1919 - 1999) was an American entomologist noted for his studies of beetles, and as founder of the Coleopterist's Bulletin. A very good copy in gray cloth with black titles on the spine.  Minor scuffing at the edges, but the binding is quite solid for such a heavy book.  The ink name of a previous owner on the ffep.  No other marks or damage.  No DJ.
