Description:
Santa Fe: The Rydal Press, [ 1939].. Gray cloth, stamped in black and green. Illustrated with reproductions of lithographs by Peter Hurd. Short surface crack in upper joint near crown, some tanning and slight rippling of the pastedowns, else a near fine copy, in very good, slightly tanned dust jacket. First edition. The dedication copy, inscribed by the author on the dedication page (and incorporating the printed dedication): "In friendship To Vernon Knapp from Paul Horgan, the first copy of the edition which is all his, in the name of a long and good time. Roswell 1939." The recipient joined the faculty of the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell in 1928 as a member of the English faculty, and in time excelled as well in geology, serving as department head. He retired as a LTC and was inducted into the Institute's Hall of Fame in 1958. Horgan, himself a graduate of the Institute, was later on staff there, and the Institute's Library was named for him.

Description:
New York: Harper & Bros., 1857.. Original gray cloth, stamped in gilt and blind. Head and toe of spine slightly frayed, with minimal loss, several signatures starting at center of textblock, with signs of early 'tightening' and light discoloration from same at a couple of gutters, early bookplate and some modest staining to endsheets, typical light foxing, otherwise a good copy of a book seldom seen even approaching fine condition. First edition of the author's first book, and the pioneering work by an American treating the subject of hashish usage in a literary fashion. While plainly indebted to DeQuincey, Ludlow's narrative nonetheless offers its own singular merits, based on his personal experience while a student at Union College (this work was published the year after his graduation). In later years, Ludlow achieved further distinction as a journalist, and as the author of a very peculiar account of his overland journey to California. As would be expected for the times, this title turns up in a…

Description:
[Brantwood, Coniston, Windermere: The Author, April 1854].. [2]pp. Single sheet octavo handbill (22 x 14.5 cm), printed recto and verso. Dust-toning at extreme fore and bottom edges of recto, a few small nicks, and a couple of short, creased tears at the lower edge, very good. A rare leaflet by Linton in support of the revolutionary movements in Poland as an important buffer against Russia. As opposed to the "dining and dancing Poles" in the UK, "Lord Dudley Stuart's Literary Society of the Friends of Poland" in support of the monarchy, Linton asserts: "The revolutionary party is the people's party. It represents Poland. Help it." He identifies the latter as "the allies of the European Democratic Committee, the friends of Mazzini and Kossuth, [and] the central Committee of the Polish Democratic Society." It is probable that Linton printed this piece on his own press. OCLC locates copies at the British Library, Yale, and the National Library of Australia. NCBEL III:533. OCLC: 61658116 & 560788740.

Description:
[New York: The Intimate Gallery], 17 April 1927.. [4]pp. Folded leaflet, 28 x 21.7cm. Fine. First edition. An important document in the history of The Intimate Gallery and John Marin's career, being Stieglitz's own sortie into the fray of opinion surrounding the sale of a group of Marin's paintings to Duncan Phillips in December of 1926. In brief, Stieglitz told several intimates that Phillips had paid $6,000 for Marin's BACK OF BEAR MOUNTAIN. Word leaked out to the public, Phillips claimed that the figure was inaccurate, and he and Stieglitz exchanged assertions and denials. The entire episode is summarized on pp.282-3 of Lowe's STIEGLITZ A MEMOIR / BIOGRAPHY.

Description:
Barryton, NY: Open Book, [1981].. 115pp. Oblong quarto. Black cloth, lettered in silver. Heavily illustrated with photographs. About fine in lightly (and inevitably) rubbed pictorial dust jacket. First edition of this highly pictorial log of the 1980 creation of Hines's wrapped Arch installation in Washington Square, supplemented with an account of the artist and his earlier works. Inscribed and signed by Hines on the acknowledgements page: "4/8/83 For Fred, Looking forward to an appropriate blend of N.Y. and Texas - Francis Hines." Hines and his work are currently undergoing a substantial revival of interest following the 2017 rescue from a barn clearing project of a major pile of his work. This book is now uncommonly elusive.
