Sammelband comprising two works, bequeathed by Transcendentalist Ellery Channing to historian of Transcendentalism and supporter of John Brown, F.B. Sanborn. Inscription on a preliminary in Sanborn's hand reading: "F.B. Sanborn 1901, Bought by Ellery Channing of D.C. Colesworthy in Boston, Bequeathed by E.C. to F.B.S. 1901." Further inscribed by Sanborn on flyleaf: "Two very curious brochures here brought together. The distances and roads from Boston are still (1912) mainly correct. I was on Marshpee with Morton Watson driving over from Plymouth via Sandwich about 1884." Hales' Survey of Boston relates closely to his mapping of the region. One of New England's greatest mapmakers, John Groves Hales (ca. 1785-1832) was born in England, where he became a civil engineer and surveyor, prior to emigrating to Portsmouth, New Hampshire around 1810. Jay Haynes (1853-1921), nicknamed the Professor, was the official Yellowstone photographer from 1884-1921 and took the first known winter photographs of Yellowstone Park in 1887 on a 29-day, 200 mile epic journey to the Lower and Upper Geyser basins and Yellowstone Falls. Prior to this, Haynes had been the official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad after purchasing a train car for a photo studio and trading publicity photos for the pulling of his car. Haynes sold his photos at Yellowstone and published in books and journals. In 1897, when the Post Office started mailing "penny postals," Haynes and his son Jack produced postcards for the tourists which further spread the word of Yellowstone's natural wonders throughout the U. An archive of materials bearing on the early history of Burlington, Connecticut, particularly interesting for its accounts of many citizens of whom little or nothing would otherwise be known. At the center of this archive is the manuscript text Historical Notes of Burlington by one Mr. J. C. Hart (1792-1881) who worked as a teacher at a district school in nearby Plainville. An in-depth and exhaustive account of the actions and legal proceedings surrounding the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue Case of 1858, an important event in abolitionist history. On 13 September 1858, a federal marshal in Oberlin, Ohio detained the runaway slave John Price from Kentucky in accordance with the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. Seeking to skirt conflict with Oberlin locals-many of whom were abolitionists-the officer transported Price to Wellington, Ohio. Oberlin residents learned of the officer's actions and met the men in Wellington in an effort to free Price. After first attempting to liberate him peacefully, with the assistance of fellow abolitionists from Wellington, the party ultimately seized him by force-first returning him to Oberlin, and then escorting him to Canada.
