Description:
From the front d.j. flap: "When Helen Macdonald's father died suddenly on a London street, she was devastated. An experienced falconer--Helen had been captivated by hawks since childhood--she'd never before been tempted to train one of the most vicious predators, the goshawk. But in her grief, she saw that the goshawk's fierce and feral temperament mirrored her own. Resolving to purchase and raise the deadly creature as a means to cope with her loss, she adopted Mabel and turned to the guidance of "The Once and Future King" author T. H. white's chronicle 'The Godshawk' to begin her challenging endeavor. Projecting herself 'in the hawk's wild mind to tame her' tested the limits of Macdonald's humanity and changed her life."

Description:
An uncommon title. From the front d.j. flap: "The story of HMS Belfast, a Town Class Cruiser is a remakable and vital one. Commissioned at the outbreak of WW2, she became one of the first victims of the German magnetic mine. After 2 years of rebuilding she emerged as one of the most modern equipped cruisers of the time and joined the fleet that covered the terrifying convoys to Russia. She was in the only radar controlled 'big ship' action when the Scharnhorst was sunk. After World War 2 she spent most of her commissions in the Far East as a flagship and part of various 'peace-keeping' fleets."Glossy paper. Many b/w photos.

Description:
NOTE: this particular copy has the cartoon characters on the glassine front cover flipped (facing the opposite way) than any other copies that I've seen online. This was probably an error by the person doing the assembling of the front board, but, nevertheless, it would seem to be unique. So, the picture of characters on the inside of the front board is the one which most owners have facing outward.

Description:
Hans Burkhardt (1904-1994). Burkhardt lived and painted in New York between 1924 and 1937, when he moved to Los Angeles, at which time he represented the most significant bridge between New York and Los Angeles. "That Burkhardt's singular body of work could have been created in Los Angeles in relative isolation is a testimony to his fierce independence, artistic integrity, and indomitable spirit. He, along with others, endured great obstacles in Los Angeles, a city which had very little acceptance of Modern Art until the late 1960's." On the title page, Burkhardt first wrote his name over his printed name, then lower down the page wrote an inscription to a woman admirer from "Hans 1987".

Description:
Possibly 1st and only Can. edition. circa 1900. Top edges gold; foredges and bottomedges not trimmed. 30 splendid illustration pages including the frontispiece and title page. Richly painted by hand with rich, bold colours. As a result of the watercoloured illustrations there is some wrinkling to most of the tipped-in coloured pages, mostly to the bottom inch or so below the titling; not much of a distraction from the illustrations themselves. H.K. Browne is also known for illustrating books for Dickens and others.

4 colour illustrations by W. L. Jacobs. Copyright 1911; 1912 on title page, seemingly the first edition. Embossed spine and front cover; attractive endpapers front and back, plus another double-page illustration following the front endpapers with just the book title on it. Title page and the next 10 pages all have faint illustrations on them as well. Attractive bookplate of "Lettie M. Talley" on first endpaper with the date Aug. 1912. Some foxing to spine; page edges somewhat discoloured; still an attractive book and seemingly uncommon. NOTE: the first owner has attached a newspaper photograph of the author on the page before the first illustration and title page. It has stained the opposite page which has a list of the author's titles.

From the d.j. flap: "Harvests of Dreams, 1891-1991 coinciding with the 100th Anniversary of Ukrainians in Canada, is a 314-page documentary, comprising five chapters, 500 photographs, and 189 original poems commanding much interest and appeal. It relates in considerable detail pioneer farming at the turn of the Century. It resurrects life and learning in one-room country schools to which we owe so much. It deals with the trials and tribulations of the early settlers and the emphasis they placed on education, religion, community cooperation, good neighborliness, strong family unity, and the preservation of their cultural values and ideals."

From the d.j. flap: "The Haunted Realm is a collection of outstanding photographs of eerie and fascinating places throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Houses and mansions, castles and abbeys--Simon has left no stone unturned in his quest to capture the ghostly nature of these strange places on film. Accompanying the photographs is his intriguing text which describes the apparitions or spirit manifestations that have been reported at each particular site and the strange and often macabre real-life events that are believed to have caused the hauntings. Originally published in 1986, this expanded and redesigned edition features an additional 31 photographs, including those for 17 new locations."

Description:
From the d.j.: "Heaven and Hell" is a companion volume to Mr. Huxley's challenging book "The Doors of Perception", and it will be read and argued about with no less eagerness than its predecessor. Mr. Huxley is concerned here with "the supreme truth that perception...can be the same as Revelation". Visionary power, attained once by fasting and mortification, can be achieved today through certain drugs, through hypnosis, or the stroboscopic lamp. The experimenter finds himself in an unexplored New World of the mind, the Antipodes of his normal conscious living, whose properties have a heightened significance, a pure intrinsic value. This world can have the characteristics of the Paradise or the Fairyland of religion and folk-lore; but negative emotions--fear, hatred, anger or malice--will turn this heaven into a hell." In addition to the main essay, there are 8 fascinating appendices.

Description:
From the d.j.: "The pre-eminence of the helicopter as a modern naval and military tool was spectacularly demostrated with its successes in the Falklands and the vital part it played in the victorious outcome. From da Vinci to Sikorsky, the early stages of the helicopter's history are briefly outlined; detailed analysis of the craft's development begins with the experiments of the 1940's and the first true operational use in Korea. Since then the unique potential of the helicopter has been exploited to the full, and this book describes both its contributions in the Suez crisis and after, and its newer roles including its functions as a counter-insurgency and anti-tank weapon. International in scope and illustrated with 128 photographs this is the definitive account of the startling advance of one of today's most versatile military weapons."

Description:
Jean Helion's work is generally divided into three periods: preabstract, from 1926 to 1929; abstract from 1929 to 1939; and representational art, from 1939 to the present (1970's). But this distinction and others that once seemed important have today lost a great deal of their significance. The further Helion progresses the freer he becomes: in his use of form, of all sorts of forms; in his use of color, of all colors; in his manner of ridiculing the commonplace. The works executed in his later years are the output of a man who, having explored the entire realm of painting is finally free to do as he chooses. From the d.j. flap: "Soon after Neville Chamberlain's sad voice announced to the nation on Sunday 3 September 1939 that war had been declared on Nazi Germany, units of the Territorial army began taking up their wartime postions. They were soon followed by thousands of conscripts, the first in British military history. It was not long before the men and women of the armed forces stationed in south-east England, together with the civilian inhabitants, found themselves in the most action-packed corner of the British Isles--Hellfire Corner.""The book records the momentous events of six years of war in south-east England as seen through the eyes of those who served in the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, WRNS, WAAF, ATS, and the civilian population. It is the experiences of these men and women that are recorded in the pages that follow."

From the dust-jacket flap: "Henry Aaron was a young boy growing up in Mobile, Alabama, with what seemed like an impossible dream: to be a big-league baseball player. He didn't have a bat, He didn't have a ball. And there wasn't a single black ball player in the major leagues. But nothing could stop Henry Aaron.
