New York: Simon & Schuster, 1939. First Edition. Just a trifle shelf-rubbed; fine in a boldly pictorial dust jacket with a closed tear to the front hinge, minor chipping to the corners. A handsome copy.. 8vo, 333pp; blue cloth with printed spine label. The first commercially published book in Gruber's extraordinary long career. In 1932 she published her dissertation -- the first feminist study of Virginia Woolf -- before turning to journalism, where she made her lasting mark. As both a writer and photographer, Gruber covered, among other events, the rise of the Nazis in Germany, life in Stalin's gulags (in this book), the development of the Alaskan territory, the plight of Jewish refugees from Hitler, the formation of Israel, and the varied waves of migration to the new state. This copy has been inscribed and signed by Gruber on the first leaf: "To William Vaughey, Jr., Who may someday go the Arctic -- and love it. Ruth Gruber, April 26, 1940." The book includes a foreword by the explorer Vilhjalmur…

Berlin: Zentralrat, 1919. First edition. Cloth. Pages somewhat toned; few pencil notations and marginalia; short closed tear to title page; exlibris stamp from former East German library on verso of title; extremities of covers rubbed; library label removed from base of spine, still very good.. 4to, 277pp; contemporary buckram. Original documentation from this dark moment in the history of modern Germany, the weeks of counter-revolution in Berlin that followed the murders of Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg in January 1919. The councils that had been established by the 1918 revolution in the wake of Germany's disastrous defeat in the First World War were being swept aside by their own leadership. The rather hapless head of state Friedrich Ebert had allied himself with the armed forces, and, ominously, with the reactionary Freikorps militia bands commanded by Gustav Noske. It was a peculiar alliance that shortly solidified Ebert's power and set the stage for the creation of the Weimar Republic,…

It was written by the screenwriter Ben Barzman, who was later blacklisted and lived in exile overseas, with lyrics by his brother Sol and music by Bill Lind. The choreography was by Jacobina Caro, whose credits included the popular "Run Little Chillun.

Fine in bright, crisp dust jacket with just a bit of shallow chipping to the top of the spine; spine toned a shade.. 8vo, 245pp; black cloth stamped in yellow. Designed and conceived by Armitage, this was one of several collections on which he collaborated with Corle. For this symposium, they assembled essays about Stravinsky from contributors including Erik Satie, Eugene Goossens, Jean Cocteau, Aaron Copland, Robert Craft, Osbert Sitwell, and others. The artists whose work illustrates the book include Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Marc Chagall, Antonio Frasconi and Edward Weston. Contemporary ownership signature on half-title; corner of the first two leaves creased; wear to delicate spine, still a very good, mostly uncut copy. 4to, 240pp + publisher's ads; original printed wrappers. A nice copy of this early work by Picht and Rosenstock on adult education. Loosely inserted is a moderately worn copy of Rosenstock's 1930 offprint from Jahrbuch für Erwachsenenbildung titled "Die Arbeitslager innerhalb der Erwachsenenbildung." Rosenstock (after his marriage he adopted the hyphenated name Rosenstock-Huessy) was a Jewish-born convert to Christianity, a polymath scholar, theologian, and longtime Dartmouth College professor after being forced into exile in the Nazi era.
