Description:
New York, Washington, Hollywood: Vantage Pres, 1966. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good. Scarce, with only three copies found on OCLC. Oblong, 14 by 20.5 cm. Unpaginated, about 90 pages of satirical cartoons about the KKK and race relations. Some of the cartoons are ambiguous as to their intent, and not a few are most definitely anachronistic in their humor. Even when Edwards' intention might be to ridicule the Klan, by today's standards he falls afoul of not just today's standards of political correctness, but also today's norms of more widely accepted standards of taste. Not a few today would question the very notion of making light of the Klan the way Edwards does, and the racial stereotypes that he seems to accept and work off of. Nonetheless, this book offers insight into general societal attitudes towards race relations into the sixties and prior to the assassination of Martin Luther King and other upheaval that soon followed. Dust jacket with a small closed tear and some foxing…

Description:
Prague: Unknown, 1935. Cloth. Near fine. Very scarce collection of Czech caricature -- no copies located on OCLC First Search. Oblong 8vo. 21 by 27 cm. Title, followed by 33 plates, three of which are folding. The illustrations are caricatures mostly of Czech politicians, artists, writers, and other public figures, but there are also a good number relating to world figures, including Hitler, Pilsudski, Stalin, Litvinov, Mussolini, Anthony Eden, Ramsay MacDonald, etc. The style of caricature is quite singular -- comparable in this might be cited Max Beerbohm -- and as always one test of quality, one doesn't necessarily have to be familiar with the subject depicted to derive amusement from the image. Inscribed on title page by the artist. A clean copy.

New York: Galerie Denise René. Printed in Germany, 1973. First Edition. Plastic. Fine. Distinctive exhibition catalogue or brochure, with cut-away windows beneath transparent plastic front cover. Windows begin T-shaped, and as proceed, become smaller, ending in a small square, with a black background. In center is a bevelled effect, and spectrum of colors change from a purple to a blue to a green to a brown and finally black. The point of the object, and Gerstner's artwork, is precisely the play on color, and the catalogue is a manifestation of his art. 4to. 26 by 21 cm. Plastic covers, 15 leaves of fairly heavy yet supple card within. Unpaginated. After commentary, an eccentric chronology of the artist's life or its highlights. Some printing on transparent plastic of rear cover.

Description:
1889. NA. Good Plus. The letter, presumably to S. S. McClure, the founder of "McClure Magazine", is written from Hampstead, is as follows: "Dear Sir, I have my time completely filled up for some months. Therefore I can't undertake anything else at present. The proofs of illustrations and prospectus which you said you had forwarded to me never came. Yours truly, Kate Greenaway." The letter is written in a hasty but still legible hand. McClure's became a popular illustrated general interest magazine in America, especially noted for its muckraking journalism. Samuel Sidney McClure (1857-1949) was its co-founder. However, it did not get off the ground until 1893. (The magazine lasted until 1929.) Thus here we have the wannabe publisher being rebuffed in his pursuit of Greenaway who was at the peak of her fame. The letter measures 14.5 by 9 cm. It has a fold line across the center, and it is soiled particularly on the top, with a very minor loss of paper not touching the content. (Part…

Description:
Burma (Kengtung, Shan State, presumed), 1908. Quarter Morocco, Cloth Boards. Very Good. Oblong 8vo. 18 by 25.5 cm. 60 original watercolors, with 30 in each album. With Shan captions, presumably translated into English which is presented on pastedown sheet on front inside cover. The drawings in both albums were drawn by a Hkon artist of Kengtung according to labels on the front of both. The album creator might have been a man named Richard Phillimore, or something close to that, based on a handwritten inked name which isn't entirely legible. The first volume depicts the struggles against Chinese invaders and the rise and fall of several leaders. About half of the scenes show violence, or armed engagement and/or threat, while the other scenes tend to be more placid, with men shown praying, in meditation, listening, resting. All the pictures have the irresistible charm of folk art. From the text label on the front cover, this is presumably one of two books of scenes, but without that…

With Shan captions, presumably translated into English which is presented on pastedown sheet on front inside cover. The drawings in both albums were drawn by a Hkon artist of Kengtung according to labels on the front of both. The albums depict tribal villagers and hill people in various colorful dress with personal effects such as smoking pipes, parasols, weapons and hunting instruments, as well as several representations of goods production and farming. The artwork is decidedly naive, a source of much charm,. The colors can be exciting and bold. The album creator might have been a man named Richard Phillimore, or something close to that, based on a handwritten inked name which isn't entirely legible.
