Description:
1965 . Lithograph in colours, circa 1965, on Rives paper, signed in pencil, from the edition of 75, published by Mourlot, Paris, 55.9 x 75.6 cm. (22 x 29¾ in.) Although widely known as a sculptor, Alexander Calder (1898-1976) was also a prolific printmaker. This lithograph, spotlights Calder's Futurist style, a style that is more closely associated with his sculpture and highlights his talent across mediums. It accurately captures Calder's precision, but also his freedom in terms of composition. Large geometric strokes across the plate, alongside a lopsided palette of red, black and white takes Calder's iterations of Futurism, which are so often found in his sculpture, and creates a print that encapsulates his spirit.Calder received many accolades throughout his life, including the American Medal of Freedom, and deservedly so. His great influence on Futurism, Constructivism, Minimalism and American art in general is widely accepted, but perhaps most notably is the recognition he has received from…

Framed and glazed, overall size: 93.6cm x 49.2cm ID22 The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Tennis.Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries.Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. From Levaillant's Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets, which is considered the most comprehensive and complete catalogue on the subject. This magnificent work includes some of the most lively and colorful bird illustrations ever created. They capture not only the defining characteristics of the species, but also the charming personality of the individual bird. This exquisite monograph was written by Francois Levaillant, an adventurer and natural historian, who was one of the first to record sightings of Australian parrots. Barrband's skill was greatly esteemed and his name lent cachet to the sumptious work authored by Levaillant. [Amsterdam, P. Mortier, c.1710]. . Playing card, fine original outline hand-colour. Good condition. A wonderful cartographic playing card in fine original colour.By the early 18th century the cartographic range of playing cards was almost completely dominated by one important family of map makers, the Amsterdam map publishing group founded in 1685 by Pieter Mortier (1661-1711). After his death, as his son was underage, the business was continued by his widow Amelia and brother David; his son Cornelis took over control of the business in 1721, and continued it in partnership with Johannes Covens, as Covens & Mortier, on into the 1780s under later members of the families.Extant sets of the cards can be found with a rule-book, bearing the imprint of Covens and Mortier, but it is likely that the cards were first published by Pieter Mortier towards the end of his life. All playing cards are rare: designed for play and being of small format, they were extremely vulnerable to damage from handling, and easy…
