Informative and chatty letter from Clarissa Green to her husband Josiah. Second part of letter to "Friend William". The Green family of Salisbury New Hampshire is well documented although we're curious as to why Josiah is residing in Charlestown, Massachusetts, away from his wife in Salisbury. Nonetheless, Josiah worked as a carpenter and clock repairer and was active in the local Baptist Church. Edward Sims Van Zile (1863-1931) was an American writer living in New York who published fiction, non-fiction, biographies, a commentary on war, and a history of the early days of movies. Who's Who in New York lists 17 published books and plays. In 1885 he began what might have been one of the earliest "gossip columns" writing for Joseph Pulitzer's New York World as the editor of a column called "Personal and Pertinent". In 1888 Van Zile filed for a patent to "watch" baseball games remotely utilizing telegraph messages which would be posted on his "Bulletin Board and Base Ball Indicator". Interesting record from Haverhill, Massachusetts farmer and businessman B.G. Boardman. The book serves as a ledger with income and expenditures listed and also notes personal events, the weather and trips. Also find record of several current affairs such as the 1873 smallpox epidemic and a "great fire" in Boston on Congress Street, November 1872. "I could see the fire lay in bed Congress St." Book also serves as a selective listing of local citizens as Boardman records who he is buying and selling goods to and from. Margulies, Cylvia Kleinman Manuscripts for Children's Stories by Renowned Pulp and Science Fiction Editor Cylvia Kleinman Margulies, [circa 1940?] Ten original typed drafts, two photocopies, with copious handwritten notes and amendments 8.5" x 11". 98 pp. of story drafts + some with title pages (1-2 each) + most with 1 p. typed commentary. All very good: some light scuffing, edge wear, spotting and paperclip scarring, with a few scattered small stains. Cylvia Kleinman was born in Dallas in 1909 and married Leo Margulies in 1937. In the early 1930s, Margulies had co-founded (with Ned Pines) the pulp giant Standard Magazines; at its peak he had edited 44 titles for the company. During World War II, Margulies served as a Navy war correspondent, and Kleinman joined the WACS. The couple began their own publishing enterprise, Renown Publications, in New York; they would move to California in the early 1970s. Robert de Rustafjaell Manuscript and Photographs on "The Earliest Known Paintings on Cloth" by a noted British Collector, Author and Geologist in Egypt, 1906 Typed manuscript, 8 pp., 10" x 8" with a few handwritten emendations, three original B&W photographs, two measuring 8.5" x 6.5", one 9.5" x 7.5". About very good with some light soiling and wear at edges, a bit of spotting and creasing. Photos somewhat faded with penciled notations to versos describing measurements of the paintings. This is an original typed manuscript for, and three original photographs of, "The Earliest Known Paintings on Cloth" by Robert de Rustafjaell. The author was known as an "elusive" collector of Egyptian artifacts by the Swansea, UK's Egypt Centre, which holds upwards of 1000 of his finds. Robert de Rustafjaell was born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1859, though did report himself to have been born in Birmingham in 1876. Material generally in very good condition. Fun collection of six book reviews plus correspondence for the radio production "Book Parade" produced by Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) in the 1950's. Five reviews written by David Lavender plus a review of Lavender's book "Bent's Fort", written by Don Tracy. "Book Review" was directed by Russell Sanjek, long-time executive at BMI. Sanjek was a noted historian of popular music and author of a three-volume history on popular music published in 1988 by Oxford University Press. David Lavender was a prolific chronicler of the American West, authoring more than 40 books. Second leaf has three small holes. Previous folds. Cardinal stamp is very clean and legible as is the manuscript, in Italian. Very Good Condition. 1749 letter to Pope Bendict XIV requesting dispensation for the Marquise Minervetti Girolami of Florence to receive holy communion in her private chapel. With seal and signature of Livizzani. Benedict XIV was Pope from 1740-1758.

Gove, Aboard the Barque Nahumkeag, October 3, 1864, 7.75 x 9.75 inches, bifolio 4 pp. Four-page manuscript letter on lined paper; one 2.5 inch closed tear and a few smaller closed tears along previous folds, content still legible; manuscript writing clean, bright; good condition. This letter was sent by a J. M. Gove whilst sailing aboard the Barque Nahumkeag, dated October 3, 1864; it is addressed simply "Dear Friend Gove". J. M. Gove writes about being "on my way to San Francisco - with lumber, as usual lines are not very brisk at present." The lively content in this letter provides insight into a California resident's concerns and thoughts during the US Civil War. One previous fold which has become acid burned and fragile. 2 1/4 inch archival tape used on verso to prevent splitting. Toning to edges. Good Condition. Single map from the extensive United States Coastal Survey completed under the direction of A.D. Bache. Alexander Dallas Bache served as director of the United States Coast Survey for 24 years and directed some of its most important survey work on the west coast. This map includes San Francisco Bay with two insets for proposed lighthouses at Fort Point and Alcatraz Island.

Circa 1915 Pocket map tipped into green sleeve (scans make the folder much brighter than actual color) with black imprint. Small area of bleach to wrapper. Light wear. Map measures 13.75 x 17 inches; folder is 3 x 5.5 inches. Map has small separations at several folds, plus small tears at top fold. Colors are vibrant. Good condition. Long before it was known for its covered bridges, Madison County, Iowa had "J.G. Shriver-- Leading Land Man of South-Central Iowa." Nice little land promotional pamphlet and map produced by the Kenyon Company Map Makers of Des Moines, Iowa. We find records of J.G. Shriver (1881-1918) advertising in a 1912 Madison County Atlas but find no record of this little promotional. The "History of Madison County", from 1915 includes a short bio on Shriver, "James G. Also Mr. Hearn's discoveries to the North Westward of Hudson's Bay, in 1772. Sheet measures 10.5 x 16.5 inches; imprint is about 7.5 x 11 inches. Several small tears at top and bottom edge. Rag paper with several slight wrinkles not affecting printing. Contemporary color outline in red and yellow of coastlines. A few specs of soiling. Light toning. Very Good Condition. Map with a long history of revisions and re-prints--this likely being an early 19th century printing with the Columbia River added to the North American coastline with longitude measured from Greenwich and Philadelphia. Map includes he tracks of Captain Cook in 1778 and Capt. Clerke in 1779.

Binder of Notes and Research Materials for a Book by a Noted Female California Historian, 1941-1948 11 ¼" x 9 ½" three-ring binder containing approx. 70 pp. manuscript research material, 10 pp. letters and 2 pp. list of mining terms. Very Good condition: binder lightly worn and soiled; a few pages detached from one ring, a few lightly toned at edges. This is a binder of notes and research material compiled by noted author, publisher and California historian Marcia Wynn Samelson (aka Marcia Rittenhouse Wynn) for her 1949 work "Desert Bonanza: Story of Early Randsburg, Mojave Desert Mining Camp." A review for the book in "The Quarterly: Historical Society of Southern California," Vol. 31, No. 1/2 (March and June 1949) posited that "the author has done a book that will be needed in every library of Californiana. [Marlboro College][Military] American Soldier Gib Taylor "Annual Reports", 1951-1954. Germany, France, and the United States Archive consists of a variety of mediums including two journals, watercolors, pen and ink, photographs and pencil sketches. Overall, the collection is in very good condition. The two journals have some disbound pages which have been taped using cello tape which has become brown. Gilbert "Gib" Clinton Taylor (1929-2006) was born on Deer Isle, Maine and attended Harvard College (1947-49) and the Art Students League (1949-51). He was in the Army 1951-1953 stationed overseas, returning to school in New York. Following service in the U. S. Army, he enrolled in the American School of Art (1954-57). For 30 years, Mr. Taylor taught design, color, and woodworking at Marlboro College in Vermont.
