Navy blue cloth covered boards with orange back label, orange lettering and orange border on front panel; orange back label and lettering on spine. Boards are scuffed. Spine is sunned. External page edges are age-darkened and faintly foxed. Damp stain on the verso to the last text page (451) and the facing verso to the back free end-paper; also faintly on page 451 - see photos. This volume was the only one published. Large folio, 16 3/8" by 11 1/4" by 3 3/4". [6], 146, [2], clxxiii and with 17 plates of coins, [12, and with 10 plates of manuscripts], fold-out map of Britain Romana with tinted outlines, 1035. Lower edge of map has a 1 1/2" closed horizontal tear where it meets the gutter. Text is in English, Latin and Anglo-Saxon. Very good book, first and only edition. Half-calf, professionally repaired, new end papers and spine. Board panels are rubbed and soiled overall. Fore-edge corners are rubbed through but stable due to repairs. Page edges are age-darkened. Text pages are age-toned. Internal foxing, generally heavier on or around plates. Text block is solid due to repair.
