The second edition, with a printing of only 3,000 copies. The title translates as: "The inquiry, questions illustrating the meaning of the Holy Scriptures. A good thing for Sunday Schools. Book I. About the story of Jesus and his miracles." This copy is from the library of James F. Hunnewell (1832-1910), with his bookplate. Hunnewell was a Boston book collector and bibliographer. He published BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS in 1869. His father, James Hunnewell, became familiar with the islands when the ship he was on was sold to Hawaiian chiefs. The senior Hunnewell was responsible for collecting the payment in sandalwood and then selling it in China. Description:
[Jefferson City, Mo., 1862].. Broadsheet, approximately 8 x 10¼ inches. Previously folded, with some small separations and tears, with one larger repaired 2½ tear. Small closed marginal tear at lower left corner. Moderate patch of dampstaining at central upper edge. Good plus. An apparently unrecorded form, printing an oath of allegiance to the United States government and the provisional government of Missouri early in the Civil War. The pro-Union state government was established when Northern forces took Jefferson City in 1861 and the Confederate government established by Claiborne Fox Jackson was put to flight. Nevertheless, the shadow government continued to operate and the national Confederate government at Richmond counted Missouri as one of its constituent states; moreover, there was much conflict between pro-Union and Confederate Missourians throughout the course of the war. The document, the present copy of which in uncompleted, states in part that the signer will: "Solemnly swear that I… Read More

Valencia, 1744. [16],xcvi,279pp. Folio. Later vellum, manuscript lettering on spine. Text block detached from binding at front inner hinge. Minor foxing. Very good. First edition of a work which marks the beginning of modern Spanish historical writing. This study of the Romans, Jews, and Moors in Spain up to the 13th century was the most important work issued by the Academia Valenciana which had been founded in 1742 to publish historical studies. Preceded by a long and erudite introduction by Mayans y Siscar and by the Constitutions of the Academia, Ibanez de Segovia (1628-1708) reexamines ancient records in an effort to separate fact from fiction in Spanish history. [N.p., but almost certainly Springfield, Il, ca. May 3, 1865].. Broadside, 12 x 9 inches. Printed in three columns, edged with a printed black border. Old folds, center vertical fold with some separation. Moderate staining. Still, very good. Framed. Likely a proof copy of the exceedingly rare broadside announcing the funeral procession for President Abraham Lincoln in Springfield in early May 1865. Struck down by assassin John Wilkes Booth on April 15, 1865, Lincoln's body lay in state in the White House on April 18, and a ceremonial funeral service took place in Washington, D.C. around noon on April 19. Two days later, President Lincoln's casket was loaded on a funeral train headed for Springfield, Illinois, stopping at Baltimore, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, New York City, Albany, Buffalo, Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis, Michigan City, and Chicago before arriving in Lincoln's adopted hometown early on the morning of May 3. Queretaro: Imprenta de J.M. Lara, 1848.. 62,[2]pp. Original printed wrappers, later stitching. Wrappers somewhat worn and soiled, vertical tear into border of front wrapper, spine heavily chipped. Presentation inscription on verso of front wrapper. Faint vertical crease, small stain in upper margin of last few leaves, occasional underlining in pencil. Overall very good. Untrimmed. A presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the verso of the front wrapper. A strident criticism and call for opposition to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican-American War, penned by tireless advocate of Mexican independence Manuel Crecencio Rejón. Rejón believed that the treaty, which he saw as capitulating to the United States' duplicitous and aggressive schemes to take over Mexico, would spell the death of the still adolescent Mexican Republic and its continued sovereignty. Much of the pamphlet is dedicated to describing how the Americans manipulated and encouraged the Texan rebellion in order… Read More

Lima: Imprenta Real de los Huerfanos, 1806. [18],9,cxcviii,[2]pp. plus two folding leaves of letterpress. Small quarto. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt. Rubbed at extremities, boards warped. Text heavily wormed. Light dampstaining and tanning. Poor. The first edition of the first treatise on hygiene in Spanish. Professor Unanue was famous in his time, and through his books his prestige reached Europe. In this book the author, who today would be considered a physician-hygienist, was very interested in diet, climate, the races that lived together in Lima, the typical diseases of the place, food, the methods of curing climatic illnesses, etc. There are also various references to wine as a curative throughout the text. Unanue's importance continues to this day, evidenced by the number of times he is cited in Aristides A. Moll's history of medicine in South America, ÆSCULAPIUS IN LATIN AMERICA (1944). Of great interest for the history of medicine and hygiene. MEDINA, LIMA 2013. VARGAS UGARTE 3281.… Read More

Philadelphia: Printed for John Fenno, by John Bioren, 1797.. 37,[1],lviii pp. Early 20th-century three- quarter morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt, raised bands. Joints rubbed, light shelf wear. Moderate tanning, light scattered foxing, some faint old stains. Overall, a very good copy. The first edition of the infamous "Reynolds pamphlet," in which Hamilton describes his affair with Maria Reynolds and admits to paying off a blackmailer. In the pamphlet Hamilton takes the extraordinary step of admitting to adultery in order to clear his name of financial scandal in his office as Secretary of the Treasury. While successful in its purpose, it destroyed any hope of a political career on the national stage, and provided salacious ammunition for his enemies. A second edition, printed in 1800, was published by Hamilton's opponents to keep the scandal alive in the election of 1800, after the Hamilton family had purchased and destroyed most of the original edition. Bookplate on front free endpaper. Very clean internally. Overall near fine. Mably's work consists of four letters written to John Adams, then the American Minister to Holland, on the government, laws, and political divisions in the United States. The French took great interest in the form that the American government would take after the Revolution, publishing the constitutions of the thirteen states in 1783. "Mably comments on the American approach to government as reflected in the constitutions of the thirteen states, and, more specifically, in those of Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Georgia...he offers advice on a national constitution, urging a loose federation rather than a strong central government and warning against excessive democracy" - Cohen. Cincinnati, 1901.. [6],260pp. Original green cloth. Some bleach spots on covers, binding a bit cocked. Title- leaf mounted on silk. Overall a good copy. First American edition, after the first British edition printed in London in 1898. A scarce account of an Englishwoman's quest for good health and happiness raising alfalfa and other crops in southern New Mexico. Includes chapters on "the Mexican in New Mexico," the climate and soil, irrigation, mineral resources, and "Politics and Sectionalism." Interestingly, there is also an account of the story, obtained from the author's friends, of that "all-too-marvellous youth," Billy the Kid. Dykes claims that "Nicholl" was a pseudonym for Edith M. Bowyer, and notes that the exaggerated stories she reports about Billy the Kid is evidence that "the tales about the Kid were pretty tall even back in the nineties." Description:
Philadelphia: Printed by John Dunlap, 1774. x,241,[1]pp. 12mo. Modern three-quarter calf and marbled boards. Minor foxing and toning. Very good. The "gentleman of foreign extraction" was actually Jacob Duche, a notorious Philadelphia Loyalist, distinguished for having been appointed Chaplain of the Continental Congress and then turning the tables on his fellow revolutionaries by predicting their defeat and urging the recall of the Declaration of Independence. He was cursed as a traitor and took refuge in England in 1777. The letters contained herein relate mostly to describing prominent Philadelphia residents and institutions. The author gives an account of the Quakers, and writes favorably of Philadelphia and of America in general. His ingenious pseudonym, "Tamoc Caspipina," is an acronym derived from his position of "The Assistant Minister of Christ's Church and St. Peter's in Philadelphia in North America." There exists another Philadelphia issue of this work, printed the same year as the present… Read More

Philadelphia: Printed by Joseph Rakestraw, 1823.. 19pp. Gathered signatures, stitched as issued. Small hole in titlepage, not touching text. Strong vertical tideline to center throughout; tanned, scattered foxing. Good. The rare third edition of this abolitionist tract from radical Quaker minister Elias Hicks. Earlier editions appeared in 1811 and 1814. Hicks, a native of New York, is largely credited with kicking off the nascent "Free Produce" movement in earnest with this pamphlet, which encouraged a boycott of all goods produced by slave labor. This Philadelphia edition anticipates the first American printing of British abolitionist Elizabeth Heyrick's work encouraging the same tactic, aiming to put pressure on slaveholders "by circumscribing their avarice, and preventing their heaping up riches, and living in a state of luxury and excess on the gain of oppression...." Hicks continued his boycott of slave produce until the end of his days, and tradition holds that on his deathbed in 1830, his… Read More
