Description:
P. D." [Paul Dumas, Paris, ca. 1930]. A fine set of three very large sheets (119 x 73 cm each) with pochoir designs with flowers and birds, for wallpaper or similar ornamental purposes. An exceedingly rare collection of very large original wall-paper artwork. The pochoir process involves the application of gouache or watercolour pigments through the medium of stencils by which many different colours could be applied layer after layer to a single print. The patterns show an interesting variety in colour, based on the same design. This is an (early) work of the French firm of Paul Dumas (operative from 1906 to 1978), renowned for its high-quality wallpaper and wallpaper design. The designs remind of the work of Paul Poiret, who worked for Dumas. Poiret (1879-1944) "...was a leading French fashion designer during the first two decades of the 20th century. His contributions to his field have been likened to Picasso's legacy in 20th-century art" (Wikipedia). In all, this forms an… Read More

Description:
[Paris], [1970]. Single leaf (65.0 x 50.0 cm). Pochoir on wove paper. Signed in pencil by the artist. A very large copy of Sonia Delaunay's 'alphabet' design. Signed by the artist and annotated 'EA" [Épreuve d'artiste]. A similar design, on a much smaller format, was published in an edition of 180 copies, but is no match. This is an archetypal design by the French-Ukrainian Art Deco artist, Sonia Ilinitchna Delaunay, née Stern (1885-1979). "Together with her husband, the artist Robert Delaunay, she developed 'Orphism' or 'Orphic Cubism', a term coined by the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire in 1912, [it] was an offshoot of Cubism that focused on pure abstraction and bright colors, influenced by Fauvism, the theoretical writings of Paul Signac, Charles Henry and the dye chemist Eugène Chevreul. This movement, perceived as key in the transition from Cubism to Abstract art, was pioneered by František Kupka, Robert Delaunay and Sonia… Read More

Description:
Amsterdam and Rio de Janeiro, Colibris Editoria [AND] London, A. Zwemmer, 1960. Two parts in two. Folio (43.6 x 28.8 cm). Text volume 40 pp., printed wrappers. Plate volume 23 pp.; 60 beautiful plates (32 in full colour) of neotropical birds. Cloth with full colour pictorial dustjacket. Combined in original slipcase with printed label on the spine. A fine reproduction of the utterly rare original 1835 edition titled "Oiseaux brillants et remarquables du Bresil", including its original French text. The descriptions are repeated in English in the Atlas volume. The publication of the original text, by Zemmer in London, was felt to be a necessary addition to the plates. Pictorial bookplate on the front free endpaper recto of the atlas, a few plates loose due to the lumback binding, otherwise good. Complete copies, especially with the original slipcase, are not very common.
