About This Item
London.: Japan Library. 1991.. With an introduction and notes by Sir Hugh Cortazzi, in addition to the 1906 introductory, postscript and notes by William Elliot Griffis. Colour and black and white plates, ix + 269pp, index, spine faded, a good copy in dustjacket. Richard Henry Brunton with his wife and two assistants travelled to Japan at the request of the Japanese government to 'light up' the Japanese coastline with a series of lighthouses. This memoir of the eight years Brunton spent in Japan is fascinating with much in it about the clash of cultures he experienced while dealing with the class-conscious 'samurai' ruling elite. .
