Oliver Bullard Rasmussen (1922-1980) was born on the Chippewa Indian Reservation in northern Wisconsin. In World War II, he was a U.S. Navy aircrewman; he avoided capture after his plane crashed in Japan on July 14, 1945. Seriously wounded, he dodged the Japanese on Hokkaido for 68 days, healing himself and relying on his Chippewa knowledge of survival in the wild.
