NY: Harper & Brothers, [1928.] 2nd edition, with striking Art Deco illustrations not in the 1925 1st. Copyright page date code I-C (September 1928.) The first illustrated edition of Cullen's debut book of poetry, a work that established him as a leading African American poet and important figure in the Harlem Renaissance. Illustrated in b&w by Charles Cullen (no relation), who was influenced by the lush eroticism of Aubrey Beardsley. 108 pp. Hardcover with black cloth spine over decorative paper boards. Paper spine and cover labels. VG with moderate wear at the corners but no significant flaws. Sound and securely bound. Small bookseller label and laid-in bookplate with a jazz design in Deco style. The plate is for American English educator Lois Symons (1927-2021.) No paper dust jacket but protected by a new, clear archival jacket.

I've never read poetry before, it just did not hold my interest, until I accidentally picked this book up, while thumbing through a box of books I was going to donate. Needless to say, it will now stay on my office shelf for inspiration, calmness and a small taste of spirituality.
