After serving briefly in the Continental army during the American Revolution, Delano began a lifelong career as sailor, ship captain, and occasional shipbuilder, often in conjunction with his brother Samuel.
Delano gave significant space to an account of his capture of the Spanish ship Tryal off the coast of Chile in 1801 and to the events subsequent to the capture. Complete with 60 lithographed plates and 15 folding maps plus extensive woodcuts. The first 3 volumes were printed in 1857 and the last two in 1858. All are first editions bound uniformly as best the binder could, as the printer marbled the edges in 1857 but didn't in 1858, or publisher used a different printer which may explain tissue guards in volumes 4 and 5 and not in the first 3. Edges on volume 4 and 5 are plain. Small stain to corner of frontispiece in volume 2 not affecting the image. A tight, very good plus or better set.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

Bruxelles: Librairie historique-artistique, 1843. First edition. 4 large in-8 volumes, (270 mm x 170 mm). Midnight blue half-sheepskin binding, embossed percaline covers, spines have gilt titles and decoration. Illustrated with hand coloured / hand finished engraved plates. These were created by the leading illustrators of the time, including Duverger, L. Markaert, R. King. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little rubbing to the edges only. Inside, the text and plates have light foxing throughout, but are overall in very good condition. Each copy online offers a different number of plates for each of the four volumes - but our copy seems to match the maximum collation for each variation (so seems complete.) The index is of limited use, as it only lists a proportion of the plates.
