James Hogg (1770-1835) was a Scottish poet, novelist and folklore collector who wrote in both Scots and English. Known as 'The Ettrick Shepherd' (he was born on a farm near Ettrick, Selkirkshire, worked for a time as a shepherd), he was almost entirely self-educated. He befriended some of the great writers of his day, including Sir Walter Scott and Lord Byron, and played a major part in promoting Scottish culture at home and abroad.
