He wrote more than 50 books, mostly in the fields of African-American history and general U.S. history. He was also the literary executor for W.E.B. Du Bois. This book tracks several important moments in Black history including: Slave Guerrilla Warfare, Buying Freedom, Militant Abolitionism,. Negro Casualties in the Civil War, Negroes in the Union Navy, Organizational Activities, Mississippi Reconstruction and Charles Caldwell. From the introduction, Aptheker writes: "The Negro's past runs through the warp and woof of the fabric that is America. This path has been clouded and obscure by distortion, omission, and, at times, by sanctimonious, patronizing sentimentality. Denying the American Negro people a past worthy of serious study and emulation weakens their fight for equality and freedom." Dust jacket has minor chipping at top.
