Cassell & Company Ltd, 1884. Hardcover. Acceptable. 1884. First Edition. 657 pages. No dust jacket. This is an ex-Library book. Brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Volume I only. Limited edition to 170 copies, of which this is copy 71. Flat signed by the author, Richard Owen. Library copy, with expected inserts, stamps and inscriptions. Black and white illustrations throughout. Severe cracking to front hinge causing board to come away from text block. Rear hinge is slightly cracked, exposing netting. Binding throughout remains firm. Rough-cut pages have mild tanning with faint dust marks. Slightly more pronounced tanning to edges and endpapers. Minor chipping and tearing to edges, as expected. Thumb-marking to endpapers and pastedowns. Boards have moderate edge wear with corner bumping. Visible tanning to spine and edges with some crushing to spine ends. Noticeable splits to spine ends with loss to edges. Minor fraying to corners. Faint rubbed marks and scratches to both boards.
