Joseph Priestley FRS (1733--1804) was an English chemist, natural philosopher, separatist theologian, grammarian, multi-subject educator, and liberal political theorist He published over 150 works, and conducted experiments in electricity and other areas of science He was a close friend of, and worked in close association with Benjamin Franklin involving electricity experiments
Priestley's science was integral to his theology, and he consistently tried to fuse Enlightenment rationalism with Christian theism In his metaphysical texts, Priestley attempted to combine theism, materialism, and determinism, a project that has been called "audacious and original" He believed that a proper understanding of the natural world would promote human progress and eventually bring about the Christian millennium Priestley, who strongly believed in the free and open exchange of ideas, advocated toleration and equal rights for religious Dissenters, which also led him to help found Unitarianism in England The controversial nature of Priestley's publications, combined with his outspoken support of the American Revolution and later the French Revolution, aroused public and governmental contempt; eventually forcing him to flee in 1791, first to London and then to the United States, after a mob burned down his Birmingham home and church He spent his last ten years in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania

An History of the Corruptions of Christianity, published in 1782, was the fourth part of Priestley's Institutes of Natural and Revealed Religion
Priestley's major argument in the Institutes is that the only revealed religious truths that can be accepted are those that also conform to the truth of the natural world Because his views of religion were deeply tied to his understanding of nature, the text's theism rests on the argument from design Many of Priestley's arguments descended from 18th-century deism and comparative religion The Institutes shocked and appalled many readers, primarily because it challenged basic Christian orthodoxies, such as the divinity of Christ and the miracle of the Virgin Birth He wanted to return Christianity to its "primitive" or "pure" form by eliminating the "corruptions" which had accumulated over the centuries The fourth part of the Institutes, An History of the Corruptions of Christianity, became so long that he was forced to issue it separately Priestley believed that the Corruptions was "the most valuable" work he ever published
Volume 2 contains Priestley's attach on Gibbon, which led to the celebrated letters between the two 426, 489 pp.

Description:
1696-1731 1ed Baruch Spinoza Philosophy Fenelon Boulainvilliers Metaphysics Primarily remembered for his novel "The Adventures of Telemachus", Francois Fenelon was a French archbishop of Cambray who wrote a number of poems and essays. However, one of his lesser-known works was his collecting of other works which refuted the writings and philosophical thought of Baruch Spinoza. "Refutation des Erreurs of Spinosa" contains essays by Henri Boulainvilliers, Colerus, Orobio, and Francois Lami, as well as Fenelon's own thoughts; however, only about ten pages of this entire book were original to Fenelon. This book contains the principles of Spinoza's metaphysical and philosophical thoughts as well as the responses of these highly influential European philosophers toward Spinoza. Description:
1732 John LOCKE Essay Concerning Education English Philosophy Pedagogy Sydenham

"I have always thought the actions of men the best interpreters of their thoughts."
– John Locke

After studying medicine under the teaching of Thomas Sydenham, John Locke began his journey of philosophical thinking that would develop into some of his most famous works. In 1693, Locke published a treatise on education entitled 'Thoughts Concerning Education'. Throughout the 18th-century it was the most important work on the philosophy of education in England. This work was an extension from 'Concerning Human Understanding' in which he describes how to educate the 'blank slate' mind described in 'Human Understanding'.

A rare 1732 edition of Locke's famous education treatise.

Description:
The Spectator was a two or three page paper written by Addison and Steele that was published from 1711-1712 in London, England. Eight bound volumes of The Spectator were published in later runs, each volume containing about 200 daily editions.
Boards are rubbed, scuffed and soiled and most of the gilt spine titles and red band backgrounds have faded. Corners are bumped. Volume two's rear board and volume eight's front board have seperated from the spine but have a very clean break and could be reattached with some basic rebinding. Raised spine ribs. Endpapers and title pages show minor browning with age, but all other pages are clean and bright for their age. Indexes at the rear of the texts.
All proceeds benefit The Friends of the San Anselmo Library. No expedited shipping on this set. Extra charges for sending the set will be added to the order after shipping to match the actual cost of mailing.
