First edition; two volumes; 340, 368pp. In contemporary full speckled calf (somewhat worn, front hinges cracked but secure), gilt volume numbers and remains of title labels to spines, early ink ownership inscription to half-title of volume 2, sporadic light paper browning but overall a very good complete copy of this uncommon history. This copy is from the estate of Rex Maughan (1936-2021), major Robert Louis Stevenson collector and archivist who, as Chairman of the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, greatly contributed to the preservation of Stevenson's estate in Valima, Samoa.

Modern ink owner's name to the front pastedown. Pages browned throughout. Underlining in red and blue crayon throughout, more so to the first half of the volume. German translation of the first 12 letters by Forster. The second part of the letters was apparently published in English in 1798 and in German in 1800..

Mexico: Don Felipe de Zuniga y Ontiveros, Calle del Espiritu Santo, 1787 Book. Poor. Full vellum. [ii], xxxvi, [ii], 100, [ii], 114, [ii], 51, [3], 53-65, [3], 67-373 but lacking pages 317-320 and with duplicates of 321-4 bound in their place. So just volume 1, incomplete as lacking 4 pages of text and also here heavily affected by book worm - many old paper repairs now browned. Worming to almost every page - often heavy and often affecting the text. However not all that often affecting the sense. In the original full vellum binding which is browned and which still has the original cord ties..
