About This Item
New York: The Macmillan Company. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. 1946. 3rd printing. Hardcover. [minor wear only to lower extremities, old literary agency label on front endpaper (Literary Corporation of America, Los Angeles); the jacket has tiny chips at both ends of the spine, a couple of tiny edge-tears, very slight paper loss at top rear corner]. (B&W illustrated plates, rear endpaper map) A fictionalized biography of "San Francisco's Forgotten Jason," "the rags-to-riches-to-rags drama of a robber baron of America's gold-rush days." Brannan's life was "closely interwoven with the early history of California. He started the first school [in San Francisco]; he published the first newspaper; he became California's wealthiest citizen; he helped finance the first railroad west of the Mississippi; he did more toward building San Francisco, Sacramento, and the state of California than any other person. He was an individual -- a hell-roaring, courageous, six-foot-two, unscrupulous individual -- the like of whom never lived before nor will again." .
