Corners and spine rubbed, superficial cracking to front inner hinge but hoding tightly, binding is sound, former owner's bookplate and bookseller's small label on front pastedown, owner's name on front free endpaper, contents are mildly toned and there is a very occasional marginal note. A fascinating and often witty critique of American society in the 1830s. Howes H-138.

Thick 4to, 3/4 brown leather, marbled boards. 1056 pp. Willis moved from the east coast to Sacramento county in 1871, where he engaged in farming near Elk Grove, and teaching, until 1892. He then became a member of the editorial staff of the Record-Union, and continued the association for thirteen years. In 1879 he was tendered an appointment on the county board of education, of which he remained a member for twenty-three years.

CONDITION: FAIR. A clean, tight copy internally. Covers well worn with substantial rubbing to edges, corners, and spine. Front board nearly detached. Owner's inked and penciled names on front pastedown and title page.

Keller) or b/w sketch drawings that would appear in the published final book. 56 pp. Text is lightly yellowed typical of the pulp paper used in the printing. Leaves are clean and unmarked. There is evidence that a page 57 may have existed, but it has been torn from this copy and is missing. This rare, comprehensive history of the City of Chicago has hundreds of illustrations throughout the text. Andreas was a historian and publisher publishing atlas' and books on Chicago, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Inidana, Minnesota, Kansas, Nebraska and the Dakotas. Binding has bumps and scuffs. Front hinge is cracked and the first 46 pages are loose but not damaged. Two small leafed branches were set into the book by a former owner and have been left in.
