A smart first edition of this philosophical poem from Walter de la Mare, with colour images from John Piper. First edition. Illustrated with four colour plates. Collated complete. A long philosophical poem, full of verbal beauty and the sense of mystery expected from the author, with a depth of meaning. Written by Walter John de la Mare, an English poet, short story writer and novelist. Illustrated by John Egerton Christmas Piper, an English painter, printmaker and designer of stained-glass windows, as well as opera and theatre sets. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light wear and fading to the extremities. Original unclipped dust wrapper is worn with chipping and light loss to the extremities. Loss to the spine and with closed tears to the extremities. A 5" closed tear to the front panel. Rear panel detached but present. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with minor age toning to the endpapers. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper. Very Good Indeed
