Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition, first issue with 'actresses' for 'ancestresses' on page 207, line 33, and chapters 47 & 48 misnumbered as 48 & 49. Two volumes bound as one. Volume I dated 1858 on title page and Volume II dated 1859 on title page. Illustrations by the author. Rebound in 3/4s brown morocco with marbled boards. Spine lettered in gilt. Five raised bands. New pastedowns and flyleaves added when rebound. Browning to the plates. Text is clean with some tanning. Binding is tight and square.
