From the introduction: " "One result of the intense religious and political struggles produced by the four-and-a-half year civil war of the Fronde (January 1649-October 1652) was the appearance of large numbers of pamphlets. It is impossible to know exactly how many appeared; estimates range from 5,000 to 11,000. In all likelihood, only about a quarter of all pamphlets written were published; the rest remained in manuscript, but, nevertheless, had a wide circulation. Reflecting as they did the social and political aspects of the Fronde, these "Mazarinades, " as they were called, remain one of the most fruitful sources for a study of this exciting period.
