Description:
New York: Hollis Taggart Galleries, 2006. Softbound. VG. Glossy color illustrated wraps. 96 pp., profusely illustrated in color. This is a catalogue for a major full-scale retrospective of the work of American modernist Arnold Friedman (1874-1946). Not since the Jewish Museum's memorial exhibition of 1950 has such an effort to explore the artist's work in depth been undertaken. Guest curator William C. Agee, Evelyn Kranes Kossak Professor of Art History at Hunter College and former director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, has contributed to the exhibition's catalogue an extensive essay, the first publication to thoroughly cover the artist's career including previously unstudied aspects of his early work. With nearly 50 paintings on view, this exhibition offers a thoughtful new look at the painter described by Clement Greenberg as "a pure, honest, serious and independent personality." Active in the progressive milieux of the early twentieth century American art world, Friedman pursued his own… Read More

Hollis Taggart Galeries, 2006. First. Softcover. Very good except for minor rubbing, a scuff at the top corner of the backstrip and creases long the bottom edge of the front cover. 4to, stiff pictorial wrappers. 96 pp, 46 color illustrations + 49 text figures and photographs, color frontispiece, bibliography. Exhibition May 24 - June 30, 2006. Friedman (1874?-1946) was forced by family circumstances to take a steady but low-paying job with the post office in 1893, where he worked for 40 years. While it was not until his retirement that he was able to become a full-time painter, after about 1905 he took his art seriously, studying with Robert Henri, spending six months in Paris while on leave from the post office, and showing with the Society of Indendent Artists, an influential group whose membership included Bellows, Marin, Duchamp, Prendergast, Man Ray and Joseph Stella. Exhibiting regularly from about 1915, and in solo exhibitions from 1925, he attracted important critical notice. This… Read More
