Description:
A Paris: [s.n.], 1791. xxiv, 93pp, [1]. Disbound. With a half-title. Very occasional chipping to margins, ink-stamps of the Mercantile Library, Philadelphia to head of title page and p.73. A French translation of two letters by Irish born politician and philosopher Edmund Burke (1729/30-1797) to a member of the National Assembly, predominantly relating to Joseph Priestley's (1733-1804) critical response to his Reflections on the Revolution in France (London, 1790). The Reflections became the definitive polemical defence of the eighteenth-century British polity against revolutionary politics. It found an immediately receptive conservative audience at home and abroad, and was reissued many times before the end of the eighteenth-century, by which time developments in France had made Burke’s work seem remarkably prophetical. . 8vo.

Description:
London: Printed for J. Debrett, 1782. [2], iv, 132pp, [1] With a terminal leaf of publisher's advertisements. Later half-calf, marbled boards, lettered in gilt to spine. Armorial bookplate of Robinson of Rokeby to FEP. The first London edition of a rare and important account of the 1781 insurrection in Benares, written by the then Governor of Bengal, Warren Hastings (1732-1818). This event and others during Hastings's administration of the region led to a seven year impeachment trial for alleged maladministration following his return to Britain, prosecuted chiefly by Edmund Burke (1729/30-1797). It became an cornerstone in the debate about the transaction of rule in India by the East India Company. The insurrection arose from the Raja of Benares failing to pay a subsidy to the East India Company. Refusal to pay led Hastings to order the arrest of the Raja, only for the arresting sepoys to be killed by the Raja's personal guards. In response Hastings organised military measures to crush… Read More

Description:
[London]: [C. Bretherton], [1782-84] 31 etchings on thick laid paper, each sheet 170 x 245 mm, bound together in early powder blue limp paper boards. Extremities rubbed, marked, and damp-stained, faint inked inscription to upper board. Etchings damp-stained, all with contemporary marginal inked inscriptions identifying the subject. A collection of 31 early satirical etchings by caricaturist James Sayers (1748-1823), depicting contemporary political figures, including Burke, Fox, and Effingham. Unlike the majority of contemporary caricaturists, Sayers did not take the side of the opposition against the governments of the day, instead devoting his efforts to supporting Pitt and mercilessly lampooning the Fox-North coalition and condemning the French Revolution. A particular favourite subject for his keen satirical eye was Edmund Burke (1729/30-1797). In this collection, Burke is depicted with an awkward gait, thrusting forward a bill, under which is the unflattering caption: 'For Rhetoric he could… Read More
