A beautifully small, quiet catalogue for a 2002 exhibition curated by David Hammons exploring black abstraction through the paintings of Ed Clark, Denyse Thomasos and Stanley Whitney. Geoffrey Jacques' titular essay is a tremendous resource, questioning reductive visions of what "Black" art can be, touching on Clark's improvisation, Whitney's elaboration of the modernist grid -- which was prefigured by African American quilting traditions -- and Thomasos' gesture, liberating black tropes from a strict narrative approach. Ever prophetic, Hammons' exhibition anticipated the rise of artists such as Julie Mehretu and Mark Bradford whose careers were still young at the time, as well as this year's Whitney Biennial, which shares the same title and includes work by Thomasos.
