He was a gunner-surveyor with his regiment, the 155 (Lanarkshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery, and was taken prisoner at the fall of Singapore, spending three and a half years as a P.O.W. of the Japanese in Singapore and Japan. After an intense hatred of the Japanese that lasted twenty-five years, the author returned to Japan to finally lay to rest the ghost of the war . . .
